Just starting out! How bad will the fatigue be?

I'm just starting my treatment in Leeds. I've had my first weeks worth of Radio Therapy and am heading for another 5 weeks worth, My swallowing reflex is still OK but I have to have beans or gravy with my food! I also get affected with being sick on a night which is not good. My question is on fatigue, I am only just recovering from a stroke 12 weeks ago and am already Knackered, How much worse does it get? and anything that could help!

  • Hi Mike,

Radiotherapy can be quite debiliating and challenging when recovering but its a small price to pay on the big scheme of things and you do actually come through it and I always quote light at the end of the tunnel.

Really advanced radiotherapy now with the aim to cure and get rid of cancerous cells but given the location of where treated there is no real quick fix for fatigue etc.

That said, we are all different and recovery times can and do vary for us all after treatment.

I was diagnosed with throat cancer over 2 years ago and stopped my treatment 2 years ago this Nov approx.

I have posted a link to my blog which I hope you find helpful and I also started a thread on here called "Radiotherapy for throat cancer" and thread is under Living With Cancer.

Lots of input support and plenty of shared experiences there as well but have a look at blog below.

Let me know if I can help in any way

    regards

  • Thanks for replying Ian, I was reading the thread "Radiotherapy for throat cancer" as this is what I have.

I am a little worried that because I had the stroke 12 weeks ago I would suffer from fatigue really badly and if someone has any ideas that would help that would be great!

My stroke specialist suggested vitamin D supplements so I'm giving that a go.
