Lump found within a year of clear mammogram

Found another lump.  Hopefully a cyst like the last one.  GP said she thought it was moveable but she couldn't feel fluid.  Back to breast clinic for second time in a year and really worried this time as it feels different to the last cyst lump which was smooth and round.  Surely a mammogram 9 months ago can't have missed anything sinister??  I'm 53 and not quite thru menopause yet.

  • Hi Mary,

I am so sorry to hear that you have found another lump and sincerely hope that this is just another cyst.

Unfortunately, some lumps do appear after a mammogram. I have had a similar experience, but this may have been because my type of cancer doesn't always show up on mammogram or ultrasound. However that was 12 years ago. Since then I have had a second bout of cancer (a year after my first diagnosis) in the same breast, but I'm still living a good quality of life all of these years on.

Have you got your breast clinic appointment through yet?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

I've got everything crossed for a good result.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi.  I haven't had a breast clinic appointment through yet.  It will probably be 10 days wait just to see them.   I am very worried.  You expect some piece of mind for a few years after a mammogram but I haven't had any!  I'm worried because breast cysts are more common in younger women or if taking HRT which I'm not.  I'm clinging on to hope that when the last cyst was drained it wasn't liquid but thick white matter () so GP said that may be why she didn't feel fluid like in a normal cyst.  She also told me not to panic as out of 100 women  sent to breast clinic only 2 will have cancer.  Stats don't really stop the worry, even though I've no history of bc in my family.
sorry to hear about your experience and so glad you are still fit and well and enjoying life xx

  • Hi again Jolamine.  My breast clinic referral arrived first class post Saturday morning for Monday afternoon (after seeing GP Friday morning)!  It says 'urgent referral'.  Been terrified all weekend, almost convinced ive got bc but thinking how can anything have been missed.  If I have another mammogram tomorrow it will be by 5th one in just over 3 years!!  It's torture, just torture!

  • Hi Mary

Hope you got on ok today. Like you i sufffer from cysts , had a clear mammmogram in February and cyst was found on the ultrasound, only a small one this time so was left. Im mback at the breast clinic tomorrow

  • Hi Gracesmum,

I didn't actually get seen today as a mix up with the appointment system.  I was told I can't be seen again until 5th October so 4 weeks away!  Out of order really as everyone should be seen within 2 weeks.  Apparently the consultant has triaged my referral even though my GP sent me in under an urgent referral.  My local hospital has a backlog!

I agree with you these cysts are a right nuisance.  Every time one pops up the worry is terrible.  I suppose we should try to be positive in that we have both had a recent clear mammogram and are 'cystic'.  I hope your appointment goes well tomorrow and stay positive however hard it is.  My GP said only 2 in 100 referrals from our surgery turned out to be cancer.  I'm holding on to that and so can you hopefully.

    take care x

  • Hi Mary

ive only been refered as ive had a bit of blood coming from the nipple on a couple of occasions which i put off ringing the drs as my husband has been poorly. I cant feel any lumps or bumps so hopefully looking at an ultrasound and home.Ive got cysts on my liver, spleen and kidney oh and cervix so im just prone to them i guess. Im sorry you are going to have to wait so long for your appointment. Maybe ask them to call you if they have a cancellation in the meantime?  I do hope you are  not waiting to long x

    Hi Mary,

I'm so sorry to hear that you didn't get seen today. You must feel really let down.

This pandemic really has a lot to answer for.

Try to keep yourself busy to help pass the time until October.

I'm hoping that all turns out well in the end.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

Thank you very much for your best wishes. I will update later on x

  • Just an update from my appointment today. Was in with. consultant within 5 minutes. Had breast exam, no lumps which i knew anyway. Had a mammogram which i didnt expect as only had one in February then they called me back in to do a few more shots. Had an ultrasound, cysts still there and small. Went back into see consultant who then said everything was fine with the screenings they done but because of the two episodes of blood from my nipple asked wether i would consider having a duct excision so they could take a biopsy to rule out DCIS. Consultant was great he wanted to explain to my husband about it so brought him into the room. So im not left with the decision wether to have this small operation or not. I thought DCIS would be picked up on a mammogram or an ultrasound?
