Thyroid Cancer

My Story

So I was having a MRI to check on a pre-existing condition with my neck (nerve compression) after which my GP called to say they have found something else.

That something else was at first suspected to be lymphoma.

After a biopsy and a number of different scans it turns out I have thyroid cancer.

Fast forward to the end of June and I had a bilateral neck dissection and total thyroidectomy.

My surgeon has referred me to the oncologist as they believe I will need the radioactive iodine treatment.

This appointment is tomorrow to discuss my options going forward.

This has been the single most difficult time of my life and every day is a struggle mentally.

I constantly have thoughts about it spreading and making me really ill.

I have joined this to talk to others and share my experience.

  • Hello Danlaximus
Wanted to post to say welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to hear about all that you've been through these past few months. I hope that you've healed from your surgery.

How did you get on at the Oncologist appointment today? If there's anything you'd like to talk through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them. They're back in the office on Tuesday after the bank holiday on 0808 800 4040 (Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm).

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn

Thank you for your kind words.

The oncology appointment was positive, I got to ask lots of questions and found it helpful.

I am being out forward for the middle dose of RAI however the waiting lists is months long.

As an alternative they are going to put me forward for the low dose initially until they can get me in for the higher dose.

My only issue is now work as my furlough has come to an end and I'm expected back to work next week. I don't feel 100% still, very tired all the time and my mental health has taken a tumble.

I'm going to arrange a meeting with them to discuss options.

    Thank you

  • Hi there,

I am very sorry to hear about what you are going through. Waiting part is the worst :(

Last weekend It was confirmed that I have thyroid cancer, after long 6 weeks wait for the histology results after lobectomy.

The first biopsy last November showed as "bening". Second one in June showed some changes in the cells and was undetermined. They removed right part of my thyroid for diagnosis purposes- and here it goes.

The tumour is on the larger side, 4.5cm so I will have to have the rest of thyroid removed in the end of September, and possibly RAI treatment, depending on what they find.

What type of cancer do you have? Most of thyroid malignancies tend not to spread fast, even if they get into lymphnodes...for it to go in other body parts, it is like 77 months, as I read in one research.

That's my "dealing " with it - I go "researching".

I hope you will get peace of mind soon. It's not easy, it always stays somewhere in the back and life does not seem the same.

I am grateful that's it's "the best"cancer I've got, if there can be "good" cancers.. it could have been breast cancer, or colon, or lung, or blood, and they are so much much worse :(

It is very treatable, you do not need chemo, you have minimum time off work, and with thyroid going amiss, it's not like you lose your boob, or some other very noticable body part.

I don't want to have the rest of thyroid removed and dreading going on hormon replacement, but will just have to suck it in.

Get well soon and there will be better days soon (hopefully). This year is rubbish for lots of us

    Maryna:)
