Referral NI

Hi,

It's only been two weeks since my GP said they would refer me to the Breast Clinic here in Northern Ireland.

Friends and family have told me not to worry about the lump that I have found as I am only 22 but I can't help but freak out. And now with covid, I'm not sure when I'll get an appointment which does not help the anxiety.

Will I recieve a letter telling me I have been referred? Or will I just receive a phone call with an appointment?

How long will I have to wait to be seen? Should I pay to go private to ease my worries?

These are a couple of the random questions plowing through my mind every day‍♀️.

My GP really didn't give me very much information at my appointment and just said to contact her if I haven't heard from the breast clinic... how long should I wait before contacting her?

Sorry if these seem like mediocre worries.

  • Hi Courtney, I'm afraid I have no experience with the breast clinic so I can't help you with that directly - but I am in Northern Ireland and my son has been referred to a clinic due to enlarged lymph nodes in his neck. I too received very little information and therefore phoned the relevant department directly - firstly to ensure that they had received his referral and secondly to get an indication of how long the wait is likely to be. (This was at the start of lockdown).

They were able to confirm and advise so that could be an option for you?

Alternatively, could you phone your GP back and see if the receptionists can provide or source further information for you? They may be aware of the current situation with a number of the clinics, or they may be able to arrange for a quick call back with the information you require?

Hopefully sourcing a bit more information will help put your mind at ease.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you for your reply.

I hope your son is ok!

I think I'm going to take your advice and make a phone call for some advice. I'm afraid that I'm being too impatient lol

  • Hi Courtney,

I am also in NI.  After visiting my GP I was seen at the Hospital Breast Clinic in less than 2 weeks. Diagnosed on 1st June, had Lumpectomy on 19th June and started chemotherapy on  28th July, so it was very quick for me! In answer to your question I was phoned with the Breast Clinic appointment and they did this just in case I did not receive the letter they sent in the post because of Covid. My GP did say at the time if I hadn't received an appointment within 2weeks to let her know and she would chase it, so that might be worth doing

  • Thank you for your reply. I'm glad to hear you had a quick response, I hope your treatment goes well for you. I wish you the best of luck.

I will ring my GP after the bank holiday weekend and see what Is happening.
