Swallowing difficulties

Hi, I've had issues with swallowing and choking on food for the last 5 months.

I also developed burning sensation in throat, mouth and tongue.

GP won't see me- phone consultation only.

I had blood tests and they were all normal.

The GP thinks it's acid reflux. I was prescribed omeprazole but it does nothing. I'm also struggling to swallow the tablet every day.

i never smoked , I don't drink alcohol or coffee  and I don't eat spicy food.

The GP won't refer me to ENT or any other tests.

What are my options now?

Do I have to go privately ?

Any advice welcome

Thank you

  • Hi

    I'm sorry you're having problems.

I just feel like a hypochondriac now.

The GP has now diagnosed me with burning mouth syndrome!

I feel it's just an excuse not to investigate further.

  • Oh no, your gp doesn't sound very helpfull. I did think maybe the dentist might be able to help, but i forgot to put it on my last post! Hopefully they will do more for you, i suppose they would know more about the mouth and throat. Im ok thanks. On my 2nd round of chemo. Had some bad days but im not feeling too bad today

  • Hi, I'm sorry about your diagnosis.

The ENT has refused to see me as it's mouth/throat issue I was told to see a dentist!

I don't actually choke on food but it gets stuck in my throat after I finish eating. I drink 3-4 l of water  to try to move it down. My mouth and tongue are burning 24/7.

The GP has diagnosed me (over the phone) with burning mouth syndrome and won't do anything for me anymore.

  • I was at the dentist 2 months ago and she told me she couldn't see anything unusual in mouth and to try GP.

I'm just being passed around and nobody knows what I've got.

I'm going to try dentist again.

Thanks for keeping in touch x

  • It must be so frustrating for you. Maybe you can google burning mouth syndrome and see if theres anything useful on there. Maybe theres home remedies you could try. I really hope you get this sorted

  • Hi smurfette,

sounds like you are getting ‘fobbed off’ to me.

GP’s are amazing at this I fancy.

On a different tangent I had ‘abdominal pain’ for 4 yrs!!!. Told, Gastritis, Omeprazole of course, followed by a ‘diagnosis ‘ of IBS, & anxiety mmmm guess what, kept happening.

Then I started vomiting bile, now as an ex nurse it occurred to me- ‘ I wonder if my gallbladder is playing up’, so I asked for a scan, me thinking I was funny, said to the scanner “ oh, is it full of grit”, no, she said you have a large bag of marbles.

Had it out , low and behold , cured . The surgeon said it was absolutely rotten and blocked up totally .

so, the moral of my story is to get stuck in, don’t be ‘fobbed off’ , you clearly need an endoscopy before they can ‘diagnose’ even GERD properly. And , no it does not take 10 weeks for Omeprazole to work- if it is going to ‘work’ you would feel some benefit after 2 weeks at most.

good luck and let us know how you get on
