Swallowing difficulties

Hi, I've had issues with swallowing and choking on food for the last 5 months.

I also developed burning sensation in throat, mouth and tongue.

GP won't see me- phone consultation only.

I had blood tests and they were all normal.

The GP thinks it's acid reflux. I was prescribed omeprazole but it does nothing. I'm also struggling to swallow the tablet every day.

i never smoked , I don't drink alcohol or coffee  and I don't eat spicy food.

The GP won't refer me to ENT or any other tests.

What are my options now?

Do I have to go privately ?

Any advice welcome

Thank you

  • Hi Amy,

    how are you?

I managed to get difflam spray but unfortunately my throat, mouth and tongue are still burning.

I spoke to a different GP today and was told to stop omeprazole as it's not working.

He will write to ENT to ask for their opinion but they will probably refuse to see me due to Covid they're only seeing urgent cases. My age and healthy lifestyle doesn't fit the category for urgency.

  • Hi. Aww sorry to hear the spray hasn't worked.  At least your gp has taken a further step now and hopefully you will get some answers soon. Im ok thanks, im managing to take my tablets normally now which is a relieve. Ive had to have my hair shaved off today as loads of it was coming out in the hairbrush! Its a shock but im slowly getting used to it

  • In my honest opinion, you are not being treated fairly at all! I have had similar symptoms to you, but I was able to phone my gp and get a same day telephone appointment. It took several phonecalls and telephone appointments to get an ent refferal, but I did get one. The first was a phone call, then they kept trying to do follow up phonecalls which i declined as they would of been useless. Finally got seen by an ent on 14th august, and then had an mri 6 days later.

I would keep pestering them non stop as this is very important and covid is not as dangerous as cancer!

Just because you are only 38, doesn't mean you shouldn't be high priority.

If you can afford to go private then please do.

  • Are you losing weight? Difficulty swallowing with weight loss would probably need an endoscopy to check the oesophagus.

  • Hi

    thanks for your advice.

Can I ask what symptoms you had? Maybe mine aren't as serious. They keep asking me whether I smoke (no),drink (no),cough(no), lost weight(no),abdominal pain(no) etc

My only symptoms are choking on food, difficulty swallowing and burning throat, mouth and tongue.

I've never had anything like it!

I asked the GP today what he thought I had and he went quiet ,basically no idea but he won't refer to ENT!

  • Hi,

I'm sorry to hear what you're going through, I can't even imagine how hard it must be. I hope you have lots of support around you.

  • I had the same symptoms and same problem went to see my GP and was told just take some paracetamol a couple of weeks later my pharmacy told me to go to A and E , saw doctor there and he said i have to go back to my GP ,luckily i saw a different GP who refered me to and ENT dr and found out 1 of my vocal chords was paralised then had a scan and HEY PRESTO found out i had oesuphagus cancer , 13 cm long, in operable , given 6-9 months and told it was terminal, then had radiotherapy and then lucky to get on trial with immunotherapy just finished 2 years , tumour shrunk 75%, now 3 years later still fighting .

I had SAME symptoms ,tell him you have choked on your food and and could have died , my esophagus was so constricted they had major problems getting an NG tube in to my throat/stomach

can you see another GP and show them this post

  • Hi,

I can understand your concerns. I had difficulty swallowing like I had a swollen throat then a few weeks later, suddenly it felt like I was literally choking (exactly like food stuck in my throat) I didn't/ couldn't eat for 3 days.

A gastro consultant said he would refer for a barium (swallow test) to rule out 'globus' and in the meantime was sent to ENT, they felt around my throat and said nothing concerned them! No tests. I assume they must know what their looking for in terms of criteria that suggest something sinister.??

And I too, have been asked .. "is it anxiety"! It's NOT! - if only it were!! ... very frustrating

My story is such a long one so I won't derail your chat! Suffice to say, diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 9 yrs ago. Managed it fine. 3 years ago started crushing chest pain, rib pain, and breathing difficulties. I've been round the houses and told it's a chronic 'muskoskeletal' condition of sorts. They gave me diazepam, cocodamol, amitriptyline and now an anti-epilepsy drug gabapentin. Last two days my lower stomach is aching, left side too through to my back. I feel sick, sweating and like I could melt away to the ground. But everything is always put down to 'muskoskeletal' and to get on with it. Why oh why do so I read so many posts, like yours, where Doctors don't seem to listen to the symptoms? And try to diagnose? But more inclined to medicate the symptoms instead of trying to find the source!?

I really hope you find a good Dr that truly listens to you! And get some answers! Please don't give up - be persistent. Nobody know you better, than you!

    good luck x

  • Hi smurfette78. How are things for you? I hope you might have some answers by now or at least an appointment. Keep me up to date (if you want!). Just wanted to know how you're getting on, as i know how stressfull the waiting part can be.

  • Hi Amy, how are you doing?

My GP informed me that he wrote to ENT for advice and they refused to see me as it's mouth/throat problem I should see a dentist!

The GP now thinks I have burning mouth syndrome and won't do anything as there's no cure/treatment for it.
