How do I speak to the doctor? Re: private’s

So I noticed a new mole on my vagina inside lips about 6-9 months ago and since then it's got bigger and it's a very uneven shape. I'm concerned about it due to its size. I'm just wondering how I'd go about seeing a nurse / doctor for it to be examined. The last week it's felt a bit sore. I'm only 20 years old (regrettably have used sunbeds a few times when I was 18) and I'm really shy, I wouldn't even know what to say. I'm fully aware I need to ring up this weekbut I'm nervous. Don't really know what to say

  • Hi Butterfliesrock

Trust me your GP has seen everything, its just flesh to them so there's no need to be embarressed. I would just tell them that you want to be seen by a female doctor and tell her that you have a mole that your concerned about on your genitals. Much better for it to be seen rather than sit worrying about it. Hopefully its nothing serious.

  • Hi,

You have had good advice from Magpiemaggie. Some GP's are only doing telephone appointments at first due to Covid. They usually ask the patient to then email them photos of the mole. Because of the location of your mole I suggest that, if your GP is doing telephone appointments, you tell them that it's not possible to get a photo of the mole - they should then arrange for you to be seen.

I know it's difficult if you are shy but believe me that nothing fazes doctors. Hopefully it will be fine but don't panic if they decide to refer you to dermatology as they are the experts.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
