This site has popped up when I have searched symptoms (yup, I've fallen into the trap of googling, which I know is a recipe for paranoia!)
I am awaiting MRI results on head and neck after an urgent referral to ENT under the 'suspected cancer' route. I have been told by the GP's secretary not to think too much about the suspected cancer statement, as that is how they get it though urgently... but obviously I've slept barely a wink since!
I just don't really know what to expect or where to go from here. I attended the GP a couple of months ago, feeling generally unwell and run down. I mentioned that I thought my neck was swollen and felt tender, which the GP had no concerns about, had some blood tests which showed a raised ESR level. They advised that normal level was 12, and mine was 16 so not dramatic but a sign of inflammation. Had another blood test and result came back at 17. (Had a course of anti-biopics inbetween.
At next appintment I advised that if had a sore throat for a loooong time and persistent cough, with voice going hoarse continuously. This is what spurred the referral to ENT for MRI. Now, I am a smoker and have always put these issues down to the fact that I am inconsistent with the amount or brand that I smoke. I could go out with friends and smoke 20, but then go a week and not smoke.
So I understand that the ESR is a really non-specific test, and it's a case of ruling out an issue within the throat, but I wonder where I go next? I'm not feeling any better, and we are 3 months down the line from the initial appointment. Also, my symptoms are so random and I don't see how they can all be linked? For example; I have stomach pains / blocked nose and sores in nostrils constantly / sore throat / swollen fingers and toes / shortness of breath and pain in chest / hoarseness of voice / feeling of blocked ears / constantly watering eyes / weekly migraines / stronger prescription for eyesight every year / pain in back....
I could go on and on! I'm actually too embarrassed to list all these things with the GP, as sometimes I wonder if I'm just a hypochondriac. . I was actually shocked when the ESR came back as I'd half convinced myself that I was just feeling sorry for myself and being a drama queen.
So anyway, 9 days since MRI with no result, which I do think is a good thing as I'm sure they would have contacted me had anything shown up, but what I want to know is; where do I go from here? Back to GO for another blood test? Forget about it and see if I feel better in time? And has anyone had similar with slight raise of ESR and what was the outcome?
they tested my thyroid and lots of other things and all came back clear.
As a side-note, I had a total hysterectomy 2 years ago for endometriosis, and am on HRT for a while yet as am 36. I had multiple surgeries to excise and kept experiencing recurrence so opted for the op. I still get pain in the site, as they did not excise anything when they did the hysterectomy.
