SMEAR during covid

Hi all,

I am 28 and i went for my routine smear test around 2/3 weeks ago. Over the weekend I receieved 2 letters one inviting me to a coloposcopy and the second expressing I tested positive to HPV and low risk dyskaryosis. As everyone else has done i have googled both and HPV leaves me over whelemed is it warts ?!  Other website suggest no abnormal cells I can't seem to get a clear answer. I rung the department to ask some questions in which they were not helpful could not explain HPV and also ecpressed my smear results had gone missing making my anxiety even worse. I was told that they dont know when my appointment is due to COVID etc. This is all making me over anxious and since the smear test my vagina has hurt, feels tighter and throbs. I have abdo pain and bloated stomach has anyone expeirence this ? I would like any feed back and support it would help putting my mind at rest.

Many Thanks

Everyone

  • Hi LJ91

There are many different strains of the hpv virus and the strains which cause cervical abnormalities are not wart causing strains. If you test positive for the hpv virus, you will be checked for any cell abnormalities. Low risk is just that-the lowest stage of abnormality. These abnormal cells are not cancer. Having the hpv virus is extremely common and doesn’t always cause issues..in some cases it does and your smear has picked this up at an early stage which is really good news! If I can help with any questions, I’ll do my best-I’ve had cervical cancer twice so I’ve learned quite a bit along the way! But I must stress that abnormal cells are NOT cancer.

  • Hello,

Im sorry to hear this- I can only say from my own experience but in dec 2017 my smear results showed I had low grade and hpv positive. I had the colonoscopy and they took a little sample and sent it for biopsy. I got my results and it was all clear.
I went for a smear the following year and it came back clear and no abnormal chances. I believe hpv can cause changes in cells but they can turn back normal, if they find out you have high grade they will remove the abnormal cells, my friend has done this. This is all to prevent and catch anything nasty that could turn in to cancer. Try not worry and stay away from dr Google, it fills you with dread! I got a lot of comfort from this forum. I, myself have been recently referred to see a specialist about a mole so I know how you are feeling at present. Take care and stay strong.
