HPV positive and CIN1

Hi I'm 34 I just got my smear test results and it said I'm HPV positive and have low grade (CIN1) abnormal cells found. I'm booked in for a colposcopy in 5 weeks time. I'm absolutely terrified and sick with worry. Has anyone else received this result? Would like some advice to put my mind at rest.

also has anyone on here been diagnosed HPV positive and had it go away? Just curious to know if this is something I'll be dealing with long term

thank you

  • Hi there

The number of people who are hpv positive is literally huge! A huge percentage of the sexually active population carry the virus-for some it causes no issues at all but for many ladies it can cause cervical cell changes. Once you have the virus, you will always have it. There is no cure or treatment for it. BUT your body can clear it and have it go dormant, and cell changes can be treated. CIN1 is the least serious form of cell abnormality and it may well clear on its own with no intervention, just monitoring more regularly.

The colposcopy is a closer examination of the cervix, which will let be able to confirm the result of the smear.

i am just one of millions who has the hpv virus and many people you know will also have it. It's nothing to be ashamed of, and more importantly there is no need to get worried about it. The screening programme has done its job and identified low level abnormal cells and now you will be monitored or treated if required.

  • Thank you for the reply. It's a lot to take in and understand and it's kind of reassuring that I'm not the only woman in this situation. It feels like a long time to wait for the follow up appointment.

  • If your abnormal cells were more serious, you would be seen sooner. Your result is a extremely common one for many women, and really it is not something to be overly concerned about.

  • Hi  there

Just wanted to share my story. In March 2021 I have received a smear test result with  sevear grade (CIN 3) and HPV positive. They told me I need a colcoscopy and to have this abnormal cells to remove. I was so upset and my consern that it could be a cancer. , lots of worries and spleepless nights.

However, when I had a colposcopy my doctor very surprised that in was CIN 3 in my smear test , actually my cervix looks very normal with just a bit possible discariosis . She took a biopsy and recommened to come back in 6 months.

The result of a biopsy shows that it was CIN 1 low grade , and not CIN 3 as a pap test sugested. I was delighted.

In Septemeber , 6 moths later I had a colposcopy and another smear test. That came back all clear-no HPV and no abnormal cells.

This is my miracle story for you. Always keep hope .

  • Hi, if possible id like to hear how your appointment goes? I'm in a similar situation, had HPV for 2 years but they took a biopsy because I was having problems and found what they believe is a low grade change however my smear didn't pick it up so they're having a meeting to decide next steps!

Have they offered you treatment for CIN1?

    sending lots of love!

  • Hi AnonF,

I didn't have any treatment for CIN1- I understood that the low grade change could clear up itself . That exactly what happened in my case. I am fine, it looks like my immune system fixed the issue . HPV has gone as well!
wish you all the best and hope your hpv and cin1 will disappear !
