Hi all awaiting biopsy results question

Hi I recently had 6 moles on my back biopsied, I have over 500.

it's been 3.5 weeks was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with current waiting times with covid .

And also since the biopsies a rash I thought was folliculitis is spreading on my back chest and head and causing hair loss as well as a lump coming up on my upper back near my neck could these be connected and should I go see the doctor or just wait for my results

Thanks.

Matt

  • Hi Matt,

I'm sorry you are waiting so long for your results. Everywhere seems to be differing in waiting times - some hospitals are getting them back quicker than the pre-Covid average of 4 weeks whilst others are slower. I suggest that, if you haven't heard by Monday, you contact the Dermatology Clinic & ask if your results are back & when can you expect the results?

Sometimes the delay is because not all the doctors are available for the Multi Disciplinary Team meeting - this is where all results (whether good or bad) are discussed by the dermatologist, plastic surgeon, oncologist and specialist nurses. A decision is made as to the next course of action (discharge for negative biopsies, further monitoring for dysplastic mole biopsies or further surgery & treatment for positive biopsies). The patient is then contacted about the results. The MDT is only done once a week so this is why some results get delayed.

With regard to your rash - melanoma doesn't, in my 24 years experience of being a patient, cause or present as a rash. So either your moles are benign and may be connected to the rash in some way or you have two different skin problems at the moment. So if you haven't received your results by Monday I would contact your GP about the rash.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)

  • Hi Matt,

I just had a skin lesion biopsy in late June and my results came back in exactly 3 weeks. I think Angie had given you good advice. I don't think there's any harm in ringing the dermatology clinic if you haven't received anything by the end of the week. Best wishes and hope they all come back harmless.
