You are definitely not on your own there. 
I have the same difficulties - there have been a few comments around my cervix being difficult to find because I'm tall....not sure what to make of that... :confused:

After two failed, recent attempts (the poking around was getting sore and so we had to rearrange), my GP did my smear and took a sample without any issue. The GP did say that if it couldn't be done on that occasion, it might have to be done under a general anaesthetic at the hospital xxx 

It is annoying - the test itself (taking the sample) is completely painless, no discomfort at all. It's the getting there that's uncomfortable. 
Hope you manage to get sorted soon. Maybe ask your GP what the option is if his/her attempt is unsuccessful xxx
