My husband has esophageal cancer diagnosed Tuesday

My husband had a Gastroscopy Tuesday and was told he has a 4cm tumour that radiates 200 degrees around esophagus just over half way round 6 biopsies were taken. He had CT scan same day and bloods. CT reported no spread and bloods normal still awaiting biopsies results. Hopefully they will be back tomorrow and his case will be discussed at the multidisciplinary team meeting Wednesday. I do hope so.

i am so scared and heartbroken. To complicate matters I have secondary progressive multiple sclerosis 26 years.

Complex needs. He is my husband best friend full time carer and my heart of love. He is so worried about me and who will look after me and I am so out of mind with about him.

Dont know what to do or who to turn to.

  • I'm teally sorry to hear what you are going through, and the next steps you will take are really important for everyone.

i am only saying this because my husband was diagnosed with exactly the sam type of cancer 18 months ago. He has undergone 2rounds of chemo and 1 radio and is still pottrering around in  the garden.it is an overly scary time, all I did and do is think about our relationship and if there's anythg I can do to help at that time.we take it day by day. I hope this helps a little and please reply if you want to, take care

  • Hi Laura

thank you for responding could I ask did your husband have surgery? When he was diagnosed at what stage was the cancer? Tony is 54 fit never smoked eats healthy we can't get our heads round it.

As I explained I am severely disabled and we are desperate to stay together. We have only ever needed each other.

I keep moving my chair into the garden where he can't see me and howling with sorrow and fear.

its nice to talk to someone who knows what you're going through.

    thank you

  • Hello there

I have read your posts and understand what a complete shock this has been for you. My husband had the same diagnosis last October. He has had chemotherapy and radiotherapy but no surgery. He has never smoked, hardly drank and is of slim build so like you we find it hard to understand.

The most difficult thing is to keep him from losing too much weight as he struggles to eat much. He eats very slowly. Otherwise he walks the dog, mows the lawn and enjoys meeting friends for coffee and a chat.

Of course everyone is different but I hope you may still spend some enjoyable times together. None of us knows what the future holds but, fingers crossed, there is hope.

The lockdown has wrecked our plans to spend time with our family and make memories but we meet in the park in the lovely weather we have had.

    Good luck

    Ronnie

  • Hello Ronnie

Thank you for responding it is helping a little to know we are not alone in this.

like you my husband has never smoked only socially drank grew his own vegetables eats incredibly fit and healthy. So Cruel. Can I ask what stage your husband was diagnosed at? We've still waiting on biopsies but CT says no spread found and bloods normal. Really hoping they've got to it in time for successful surgery.

of course my advanced MS and dependency is an added concern he's worrying about me and I. Out my mind about him.

It's very early days so the shock and fear are at the forefront at the moment. But I will try to follow your advice and take things one day at a time.

    Good luck to you too.

  • Hi there

he was diagnosed as stage three and the latest ct scan showed no spread but they didn't offer surgery as the cancer was in the lymph glands of his oesophagus. Apparently the operation takes a smallish length of the oesophagus and the cancerous lymph glands were too far spread along the length.

    Best wishes

    Ronnie

  • Hi

just wanted to post an update. My husband Tony has now had all his staging tests laparoscopy endoscopy ultrasound etc and it has been staged as 2b that's a T3 tumour no lymph node or spread detected.

he has his pic line fitted next Thursday and chemotherapy begins next Friday. He is to receive FLOT chemo 4 cycles over 8 weeks. I'm very worried as to what to expect how he will be. The plan is if the chemo does what it should this will be followed by Oesophagectomy surgery then more chemo to hopefully finish. The consultant team have said as things are now Tony is on a curative pathway. A long road ahead but we have hope for a good outcome

  • That is very good news. My best advice is to that he takes all the medicines, especially the sickness meds, as it is harder to deal with nausea once it starts. My husband was resistant to taking drugs and became so nauseous that he got very dehydrated and had to spend five days in hospital. The second lot of chemo gave him very bad mouth ulcers and again it is easier to prevent them than cure them. Hence another five days in hospital. So at the first signs start swishing with salt water & get difflam and Nystan.

Very best wishes and I hope it has the right outcome. You will find people on here who had the op.

My husband is having a stent in his gullet next Thursday which we hope will help him eat and get some strength back. Fingers crossed.
