Breast clinic referrals in Scotland During covid

Hi everyone. I’m new to this forum

I have recently been referred to the breast clinic due to discomfort and swelling in my right breast. The breast feels more dense and I have pain down my arm. This has been evolving over a few months and I am naturally worried sick. I was wondering if there was anyone else from Scotland who had been recently referred and had their date through? I don’t know what to expect time wise due to the pandemic but I’m going insane waiting

thank you.

  • Hi from Scotland too. Have had red area around areola and going to make gp appt or tel appt so I wS wondering same

  • Hi pana29

the thought of waiting is unbearable isn’t it? have you spoken to your gp at all yet? X

  • I'm in Edinburgh and have received a date to go to Breast Clinic in Hospital. I saw my GP on 1 July and he confirmed a lump and has arranged my referral.  I've just received a date of 17 July - so not too long from going to see GP.

  • Hi M

thanks for sharing. Can I ask was your referral urgent? Mines is not xx

  • Hi Steph

My GP didn't mention it was urgent referral but said I should get a date within two weeks and if I hadn't heard within three to ring and he'd chase it up.  My appointment just over the two week wait   For info the Hospital letter said you can bring someone with you but I rang to check re coronavirus if this was the case and was told no you can't bring anyone - seems bit poor that they can't amend their letters!   Anyway I had more or less decided I would go on my own so at least I don't need to think about that any more.   Letter says if you have a biopsy you get results in a week.  Hope you get a date soon

  • Hi Steph

Any news on a date for you yet?

I attended my Hospital appointment yesterday.  Had mammogram and then ultrasound - during the ultrasound the Doctor said it was cancer but it was treatable and fairly small lump (1.5cm).  I was bit shocked as hadn't expected to get a diagnosis on the day!  In many ways though I am pleased to know what I am dealing with rather than more waiting.  I'm typing this on computer as managed to drop my mobile down the toilet on Thursday night - think all the worrying just made me careless!

I then had a biopsy and go back on 27 July for treatment plan but they have told me the likely treatment will be three weeks after the 27 July consultation I'll have surgery to remove the lump then two to three weeks after that have radiation treatment - how many will be decided dependent on biopsy report. They are fairly confident my lymph nodes are ok but they will remove a bit during surgery to doublecheck.  No need for chemo.

So not great news but seems pretty optimistic they can treat it.  All the staff I met were lovely and you get an appointed Cancer Nurse who will attend all your appointments and answer any questions.

  • Hi Mary

you’ve been on my mind so I really appreciate you letting me know how it went. I’m so sorry your result was cancer, but as you say this seems like a really straight forward treatment process and I’m reloeved you hear that the cancer is seems contained within the lump.

Im glad you have a plan in place as to what happens next and I think it’s fantastic you have been appointed a cancer nurse to go on this journey with. Im sure you have your own support at home but that’s good to have someone who can answer your questions and be by your side at appointments. If you ever need a stranger to chat to please stay in touch. I’m happy to listen.

I have my appointment on Tuesday morning thankfully so I will keep you posted . Take care Mary.

  • Hi Steph

Thanks so much for your lovely reply.  It is indeed nice to chat - sometimes easier to a stranger than people you know well.  One of the first things I thought when they said cancer was god how do I tell my family etc and that upset me as much as hearing the news.  I started by saying Ive got a diagnosis and it is treatable rather than immediately saying I've got cancer - I'm still in a bit of denial using the C word and still think no that can't be right!

I'm off to buy a new phone - as my mobile hasn't recovered from being dropped down the toilet!

I'll be thinking of you on Tuesday and do let me know how you get on.

  • Hi Mary

So I had my examination followed by a mammogram then ultrasound yesterday. I was then recalled for a second mammogram and at that point i was preparing for bad news. However it’s not as bad as I thought. I have Fibrocystic breast disease in my breasts. Which in my case means the tissue in my breasts is very dense, hard and rope like. The ultrasound picked up a mass which was inconclusive that’s why I needed the second to confirm that it was just an area where the tissue is really compacted. The reason I have pain his because it’s putting pressure on my chest wall. So between using my right side less and taking medication temporarily it should go away but I should expect flair ups.

im relieved obviously it’s not more serious. I hope your coming to terms with your diagnosis and your family are too. I hope you have the support you need but as we both agree, sometimes a stranger can be a good source of support. I mean it, chat with me anytime Mary. I’m here. And I would be glad to know how your journey back to good health progresses.

i hope your happy with your new phone too!!!

    best wishes

    Steph xx
