HPV no abnormal cells for 2nd year in a row

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this and just wanted some advice -

I'm 26 and last year I had my first smear test, the result came back with HPV and no abnormal cells.

Just had my second smear and the results have come back the same but they've invited me to come again for another smear next year.

From what I've read I thought they would have asked me to come for a colposcopy since it's come back with HPV for the second time on the run?

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is this correct or should I get in touch with my GP?

Thanks in advance x

  • Hi there

ive just had a letter today to say my 2nd smear is HPV positive like you.  I was under the same impression as you but they have asked for me to go back for a third in a years time.

  • I've had abnormal cells in the past and had a colposcopy  twice before and a biopsy was taken. Thankfully all was ok. HPV is new to me and I've had two previous positive results and I'm going for my third next month as there's no appointments. I am worried as I have had some weird bleeds post? menopause but had a scan and they didn't seem concerned. At the time of the other two positives, I was not sexually active, I'd just been told not to worry, it's very common and it will go away by itself, so kind of forgot all about it until the letter arrived to go for the third smear.  My question to everyone is how do you deal with taking this into a relationship, as it didn't even cross my mind before that it is contagious and there is no way of guaranteeing a man any protection as you don't even have to have had sex to pass it on, just skin to skin contact in or around that area is enough or of course oral. So how can you protect a potential partner? There are no tests for men, what if they get it!
    Thanks girls x

  • Hi there I have just had my second positive hob no abnormal cells but I have been experiencing abnormal bleeding in between periods and drs have brushed me aside not wanting to do anything to find the cause , is this normal for them to do this , could this be something I should worry about?

  • Hello, thank you for sharing your story, I'm so sorry to hear this and hope you have been able to sort things.

I hope you don't mind me asking but did you have the hpv vaccine?

    thanks x

  • Hi I know this post is a few years old now I was just wondering did you test negative for the hpv in the end?

  • Thankyou so much for your post you have helped me so much today as my results came back as HPV POSITIVE,  ive been crying thinking that im going to die, i dont know why ive had these results as ive aiways tried to look after myself

  • Hi! I thought I'd update my situation to help others. I have tested positive for HPV three times in a row since testing for it started. However I have been happily married for over 20 years so the liklihood is that I have been positive for a long while! After the third positive result I went for a colposcopy. They decided to take a punch biopsy as apparently this can help your immune system get rid of the HPV. And it worked! This year I am negative, possibly for the first time in over 20 years!  I know its hard not to worry, I have been there! But they do monitor you well whilst you are positive (yearly) and there is hope of a negative result even after many years. I hope this helps people reading this chat x

  • Hi Dawn,

thanks for sharing your update I am so pleased to hear you have since had a negative result! Do you know the difference between a punch biopsy to a normal biopsy they take at a colposcopy?

    thanks xx

  • Can I ask how u got on please ? I have the same as u watery discharge etc never thought anything of it . Hope ur okthank u xx

  • Hi, at what point were you taken in for a biopsy? Was it after your first positive HPV result? Ive just recently been tested positive for HPV but no abnormal cells. However, Ive had some mucus like vaginal discharge a few weeks ago but it was when I was expecting to get my period and only happened once- Im really worried if that’s a sign of something more concerning and whether I should do anything about it
