HPV no abnormal cells for 2nd year in a row

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this and just wanted some advice -

I'm 26 and last year I had my first smear test, the result came back with HPV and no abnormal cells.

Just had my second smear and the results have come back the same but they've invited me to come again for another smear next year.

From what I've read I thought they would have asked me to come for a colposcopy since it's come back with HPV for the second time on the run?

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is this correct or should I get in touch with my GP?

Thanks in advance x

  • Hi guys, i am 21 years old and im due to go for my 3rd/4th smear test soon and each year i have presented HPV positive but no abnormal cells. i have had a colposcopy and they said all looked normal but i am very nervous for this smear test more than the last few. anyone have any advice on what to ask? dreading having another positive as would like to settle down with my partner and have children.

    thank you xx

  • Hi Evans

Having the HPV virus should not deter you from having children. This virus is extremely common and most people who have ever been sexually active will have come into contact with it. You cannot ever get rid of it in the sense of curing it, but having a strong immune system is the best way to keep it dormant.

The very good news for you is that it has not caused any abnormal cell changes, so the correct thing to do is to have regular smears as you have been doing so that this continues to be monitored. Sometimes the HPV infection can be persistent, but it is no reason not to try for a baby if you wish to do that. Good luck with your next test! xx

  • Hi Minska,

thank you for that. im just very worried and nervous about this next one. i have got a swollen lymph node in my groin that flares up every now and then - i have had this checked and got dismissed but no biopsy's were taken which does make me feel anxious aswell.  xx

  • Hi Evans

I hope the lymph node turns out to be nothing...it’s very common for them to swell up with nothing sinister involved in that, so try not to worry about it. xx

  • Hi [@Minska]‍  i will try not to worry. my smear test is on the 2nd July so hopfully i calm myself down by then. xx

  • Hi there

I have my smear on the 2nd July also. I have had 2 previous positive hpv tests, hoping this one will be negative x

  • I am really sorry to hear you have cancer cant imagine how you feel. I have been for Colposcopy there were visible changes however the DR said they didnt look that bad but took picture and a punch Biopsy. There were no lesions or bumps. Ive had no symptoms apart from a bit of spotting once. I have noticed that Ive had a lot of watery discharge it never occured to me that this was abnormal, I have also had symptoms of a water infection that comes and goes without treatment. Although I did have antibiotics recently for a water infection that one didnt go away. Does any of this sound familiar. I mean the thing that has got to me is the doctor saying its not that bad she didnt say it was anything or what it was, I wish I had of asked because its kind of playing on my mind a bit now but I was just in a hurry to get out of there

  • Morning

Yeah it hasn't been the best year!

I'm not surprised you were in a hurry to get out of there.

The only symptoms I had were a weird blood like discharge after exercise and a pain in my left side again only when exercising.  I say weird it was really light and like a bit of mucus nothing like a period. But everyone is different.

They originally thought my cancer was in my uterus as it was so far up my cervix.  They did a biopsy on the off chance for me and when I called chasing it they even said sorry it took so long we didn't expect you to have cancer.

Its good you've had your biopsy the hardest part of all this is the waiting for the results.  If found early enough it's perfectly treatable and try not to worry although I need to listen to that myself.

  • Thank you I will try not to. I hope all goes well for you I cant imagine what your going through, esppecially when you were told they didnt think you had it!  Its not easy to try not to worry but I guess all the worry in the world wont make it any different. Best wishes to you. You are a very strong person it cant be very easy to talk about your experience much apreciated though x

  • Hi Giggsy,

How did you end up finding your cancer - was it uncovered during a colposcopy? I've had a smear come back HPV positive but no abnormal cells, and had a colposcopy yesterday but the specialist didn't really say much - she took a biopsy of my cervix as one side is a bit thick/irregular but it didn't sound like she found anything worrisome. I'm going out of my mind with worry, though, obviously
