HPV no abnormal cells for 2nd year in a row

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this and just wanted some advice -

I'm 26 and last year I had my first smear test, the result came back with HPV and no abnormal cells.

Just had my second smear and the results have come back the same but they've invited me to come again for another smear next year.

From what I've read I thought they would have asked me to come for a colposcopy since it's come back with HPV for the second time on the run?

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is this correct or should I get in touch with my GP?

Thanks in advance x

  • I had my appointment through today for the 21st April I hope you get yours soon x

  • My Hosp are not giving out apts for non essential cases and that's me apparently. I've booked a private colposcopy for the 18th May as I could be waiting another year for a NHS one and would like to make sure everything is ok. Hope your apt goes well. Keep me updated.

  • I had no abnormal cells for 12 years with yearly smears for 5 of these years.

Had HPV in 2018 and 2019 no abnormal cells, discovered I had cervical cancer in 2020 as had abnormal bleeding in the January.

Dont want to worry everyone on this thread but in 20% of women smears don't pick up cancer as its too high up. They don't tell you this, I wish someone had told me. Mine had been growing for 12 years.

Willow672 so glad you booked a private colposcopy. Hope it goes well. Please keep me informed.

Anyone need any questions answered then I'm happy to help

    X

  • Thank you for your message. Glad I've booked a private one now. Will keep you updated. Hope your cancer treatment has gone well and you are ok now.

  • Yeah I wouldn't wait for the NHS they were awful when I originally got diagnosed. I'm currently going through chemo for a reoccurrence after a hysterectomy in June. If I can make one person catch their cancer quicker than mine then I'll be happy

  • Hi,

I just wanted to say that I am sorry you are going through this. I hope the chemo is going OK. I haven't had cervical cancer but I had chemo for breast cancer 5 years ago so I know how hard it can be. Take care xx

  • Hi,

I just wanted to let you know how I got on today. The colposcopy was OK. The nurses were lovely. They confirmed that my cervix looked mainly healthy. They did notice a small white area though and they have taken a biopsy of that just to check it out. The results should be back within 4 weeks. The whole process took 20-25 minutes. I hope yours goes ok xx

  • Many thanks. Got mine on the 18th May. Fingers crossed for both of us. x

  • Hi ladies!  I'm so happy I found this chat but sad we're all here.  I'm 26 and just had my second positive HPV result (no abnormal cells).  I was the first year in school to receive the HPV vaccine and so was shocked, and probably naive, when my results came back positive.  How did your colonoscopy's go?  I'm hoping having HPV for longer than 2 years doesn't affect your chances of developing cancer... I know there's many types on non-cancer HPV!  Thanks x

  • Hi! I'm sorry you have had this result twice but glad you found us on here! The positive part to hold on to is that no abnormal cells have been found so that's a good thing. Please try not to worry. From what I've been told the majority of hpv cases clear up within 2 years especially if you're younger, so there's every chance yours will be negative for hpv next time. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! And even if you get 3 hpv positive results in a row, try not to worry.  I've been told you can have hpv for years and it never become cancer. In fact they think I've had hpv for over 20 years and no abnormal cells have been found so far! Unfortunately, my colposcopy results this time ended up being inconclusive so I have to have it repeated in the next few months. I guess that's also reassuring as they do a thorough check if you are hpv positive 3 times in a row. And the regular smears and checks mean if any cell changes happen they should hopefully find and treat them before they become cancerous. Im not sure if that helps but I hope it's put your mind at ease a little! Take care x
