HPV no abnormal cells for 2nd year in a row

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this and just wanted some advice -

I'm 26 and last year I had my first smear test, the result came back with HPV and no abnormal cells.

Just had my second smear and the results have come back the same but they've invited me to come again for another smear next year.

From what I've read I thought they would have asked me to come for a colposcopy since it's come back with HPV for the second time on the run?

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is this correct or should I get in touch with my GP?

Thanks in advance x

  • Hi

Im new to this too and have only just posted but I saw this and thought I'd share with you my experience.

I had my first smear at 25 in 2017 and it came back that I had some abnormal cell changes so they tested for HPV and it was positive, which is why they invited me for a colposcopy. They said all was well and I can resume 3 yearly smears.

It can take your body up to 2 years to clear a HPV infection. However, it is really good that they have recorded no abnormal cell changes from it. 80% of all people will have HPV in their lifetime so it is completely normal to have it.

  • Hi

    Thank you for replying :)

Yeah when I first got my results back for the first smear I wasn't concerned as I knew that HPV was pretty common. I'm slightly more concerned now as it's come back as still positive for HPV but rather than go for a different type of test they just want me to have another smear again next year but I suppose that's just how it is.

  • I imagine if they're offering it to you yearly then they want to keep an eye on the HPV which is actually really good as normally they don't even normally test for it unless there are abnormal cells present. I was told I can forget about my dodgey cells and come back in 3 years  But there is no cure for the HPV infection so maybe they're doing watchful waiting to see if anything changes next year.

Hopefully it clears without causing any issues for you x

  • Yeah that's true! I'm not going to worry about it any longer than I have.

Thank you for your help and insight :) xx

  • Hi,

I had 2 HPV positive results but this year had my 3rd HPV positive and now invited to colposcopy.

    Hope that helps

  • Hello.

I have just had the same 3 hpv positive smears and no abnormal cells. I have a colposcopy tomorrow.

    how did yours go?

  • Hi,

I too have just recieved my 3rd hpv positive with no abnormal cells. I've got a colposcopy booked. I think I've read too much literature. Hope other peoples colposcopy have gone ok.

    Take care

  • I've just been asked to go for a Colposcoby after now getting 3 HPV positive results on my cervical screenings since 2019. No abnormal cells found on each one which is a positive, but I'm feeling anxious and can't seem to stop worrying. I know it could be a lot worse but it's the not knowing and I don't understand why I'm still HPV positive and it's not cleared up. I'm overthinking and over worrying. Hope everyone's tests have gone well

  • I'm in the same position. Waiting for a colposcopy appointment after 3 hpv positive results but normal cells. I'm guessing no abnormal cells is a good sign and it's good that they are checking us to make sure. If you are happy to, will you let me know how you get on? I hope it goes well for you

  • Hi, yes I will let you know. I need to ring up tomorrow to make an appointment. I read too much online, but realistically it's good the hosp are being extra cautious and offering further tests, even though no abnormal cells found. Let me know how yours goes too. Catch up soon x
