Lump in armpit pregnancy

Hi all

i don't know if this is the right forum. I found a lump in my armpit in April. Its small, it was about the size of a pea now a baked bean, solid and doesn't move or hurt. I have rang my GP twice but they won't book me an appointment because of the covid situation. I'm now 34 weeks pregnant and can't stop worrying about it. I spoke to a GP on the phone who said the first time it's probably a sweat gland and the second time I rang then said no not a sweat gland it's probably just a pregnancy lump. They have made it very clear that I am not to ring back about this unless I'm in pain or unless it tripled in size. They told me the only issue is my worrying and not the lump.
am I worrying unnecessarily? The lump has got bigger but not tripled in size over the last 8-10 weeks. If it was something sinister how quickly would it be expected to grow? I don't really know what to do or who to contact about this, feeling very lost.

  • Hi Bluebell91,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this must be unsettling and I'm sure it's difficult to not have a clear answer about this and perhaps feeling you're not being listened to.

The best thing may be to talk things through with one of our nurses who can advise further about this (although please note they're not able to diagnose). You can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5 - or alternatively if you prefer you can post in the 'Ask the nurses' section of this forum.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Hi Bluebell,

Welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear that your GP has refused to see you due to the current pandemic. This is incredible, when they are advising people with suspicious lumps to see them straight away and, not to delay. It is up to your doctor to decide whether or not to see you face-to-face, but they can do this if they deem it necessary.

There may well be changes due to your pregnancy, but I know that, if I were in your situation, I would want to be absolutely sure that there is nothing untoward present, especially when you are expecting a little one so soon. Can you see another GP in your practice? Is your GP male or female? Sometimes you might find a female doctor more sympathetic. If you still get nowhere, you could turn up at A & E as a last resort and, explain why you are so worried.

It is impossible to say how quickly your lump is likely to grow if there is something sinister. This is because some types of cancer grow more aggressively than others. Pain is not supposed to accompany breast cancer, so don’t wait for this to get sorer.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx
