Awaiting test results for possible myeloma

I began suffering bone pains about 8-10 weeks ago.  When they didn't settle I contacted my gp who thought it sounded like arthritis and ordered bloods.  3 days later the surgery contacted me to say could I come in for more bloods.  These results came back as a little anaemic but with paraproteins in both my blood and urine.

i was referred to a haematologist and was seen last Wednesday who told me it could mean I have myeloma.  The last week was a whirlwind with lots of bloods, xrays, MRI and bone marrow biopsy.  My appt arrived today for a phone consultation on the 13th.

firstly I am driving myself nuts worrying but I know they won't have most of the results back yet and I need to wait it out.  Secondly is it common to be given results over the phone?

thanks in advance

  • Hello Claire75lou

We know that many members find the waiting for appointments and results very difficult. Not knowing can be difficult and leads to lots of people feeling anxious. Although sometimes easier said than done, try to keep busy and just take each day as it comes.

In regards to the phone appointment, this is something that we have seen become quite the "norm" since the beginning of the Covid19 pandemic. Previously results and appointments rarely happened by phone but now there is the need in some hospitals to minimise the number of people attending and so many more appointments are happening by phone.

I hope that your appointment on the 13th brings some reassuring news. If you'd like to talk to one of our nurses about your concerns beforehand then do give them a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
