Worried about skin cancer

Hi everyone,

I'm a 17 year old girl and I'm worried about some moles on my body, all of which I've had since I was a child (bar one triangle shaped one that hasnt grown or changed since it came on last year). One is a raised bumpy one, which itched once when I was on hols last year. Another is a dark brown/black freckle on my calf, about 3mm in diameter which hasnt grown significantly or bled or itched. I also have a dark mole resembling a skin tag only bigger on my back. All of these have been here since childhood. Lastly, I have a non symmetrical freckle on my thigh that has a slightly darker dot in it, this also has been here for some years and i havent noticed any change.

I've made an appointment for tuesday with my gp, but I'm terrified that i have melanoma or something. Furthermore, I dont havea family history with skin cancer. I hope someone can help ease my anxiety.

P.s I got routine blood work done in February because I had tonsillitis. Nothing was out of order.

  • To make matters worse, I keep over analysing my body and finding like red circles or birthmarks and just completely freaking myself out! Any help calming down would be appreciated

  • Hello Karen,  just read a few of your posts, and I must agree with Angie and everyone, that you should be positive.  I know it's easy to say but do try.      I myself had a funny looking mark on my leg, which was sorted out with nothing less than some special cream.    I'd had it for ages, used the cream and its hardly visible now.

I'm sure you'll be fine after your appointment.   Take care. Col.

  • Hi Col,

Thanks for your reply, it means a lot.

I'm trying my best to remind myself I'm not a doctor and to just wait and see what the doctor says but that's easier said than done!

    Thank you for your positivity

  • Hi angie,

Sorry to bother you again, I have a question if that's okay.

I mentioned that one of the moles itched when I was on holidays last year, but I honestly can't remember if it has itched since which is driving me crazy. All I know is that it hasnt itched any time recently ! Is that a good thing that it hasnt?

If it was a problem would it itch constantly?

    Karen

  • Hi Karen,

If it was a problem it would continue to itch & it would probably start to show other signs ie. grow larger or change colour or bleed/become crusty. If a mole is cancerous it doesn't change & then just stop - it continues to cause a problem. The skin under a mole can become itchy due to a skin rash or infection (allergy etc) and then clear up - it makes it feel like the mole is itchy but it's the skin underneath it which sounds to be the case with yours last year.

Try not to fixate and over think your moles or you will drive yourself crazy. As I said before, try to stop looking at your moles until your appointment tomorrow. You can't change anything today & there is no point worrying yourself over something that is going to be sorted out tomorrow - you can't get today back! And step away from the computer now - no Google etc as it's fuelling your anxiety.

Good luck tomorrow & let us know how you get on,

    Angie

  • Hi Angie,

Thank you so much for your reply and I'm really sorry for bothering you!

I'll let you know how tomorrow goes

  • Hey everyone,

The doctor checked me over and said she thinks I'm fine but with refer me for peace of mind. (She forgot to check one behind my ear, it's just a normal mole but my anxiety takes over)

    Karen

  • Hi Karen, that's excellent. I bet you feel so much better now.

Keep us updated after your referral.    Take care. Col.

  • Hi col,

I do feel a little better but I have severe health anxiety so now my head is convincing me I have leukemia! I have thse red dots on my arms that I've had for years and I have like 3 proper ones and 12 smaller ones (really really tiny) . I asked the doctor briefly and she said it's only a problem if you have like 15. I said I dont know how many I have but she still said I was fine and checked the 2 I have on my back!

I'm thinking I'll show the derm when I get refered, although now I'm having panic attacks about leukemia!

    Anxiety never ends

  • Hi Karen,

I hope that your feeling better now that you have been to see the doctor.

I would suggest that you have a body map ready for your Dermatology appointment so you dont forget anything. Helped me when my head was in a spin.

Hope all goes well for you
