Thyroid Cancer

hi,
I have been going through a tough time and would like to chat to those of you who are going through similar.

I have just had an operation for thyroid cancer, awaiting results and what is next?
I May need another operation and radiation therapy
Had my operation on the 10th June 2020 after a very long wait due to this terrible Covid pandemic many operations and treatments have been delayed sadly!

A lump was found in my Thyroid after a routine scan of my ongoing lung problems and was told on the 2nd March at hospital appointment, which was a bit of a shock when CANCER was mentioned! On the 27th April I had a scan and 5 Biopsies done and the results came back as 2 lumps and T3 which means it could be Cancer, so then I had a very long wait for my operation which was on the 10th June to remove 1/2 my Thyriod and also the middle part(can't remember name of it) post operation was quite painful, but it is settling down now
Would like to talk to people who are going through similar, maybe we can help each other through this x

  • Hi.

This is a helpful thread. I've just had my biopsy of lymph nodes which is suspected metatstic thyroid cancer.

Has anyone noticed any side effects from having lymph nodes out? I have chest ct and mri Friday and Saturday to rule out any further spreading (fingers crossed!)

    Best wishes.

  • Hi, yes I had a full thyroidectomy in March this year due to stage 2 thyroid cancer and I've put on over a stone. I have never struggled with weight before so this is a problem. However, I would 100% take the weight problems to know my thyroid is out of my body! It's caused issues for years. So im on healthy eating and workouts!

  • Evie grace I have a nodule on my thyroid and I had a biopsy, they say it's a 10 day wait for results, the thing is they got results but didn't give them to me untill 6 weeks later through a telephone consultation, that was Friday just gone only to b told that they need to do another biopsy coz they didn't get a good reading. So now I have to wait 3 weeks for another biopsy. All this waiting is doing my head in. I have convinced myself there is something seriously wrong.I'm a worrier and this is not doing me any good.

  • I can totally understand your worrying. I just spent months panicking over a possible health issue which turned out to be completely minor. However, having had thyroid cancer, I can reassure you that even if you do have it (and you probably don't; most nodules are benign), it's not really what you might be thinking when you hear cancer.

I had my thyroid and a number of lymph nodes removed, was in hospital for a week and felt pretty much OK by the end of that week. I went back to work after a month and had radio iodine treatment to prevent recurrence some months later. This just basically meant taking a capsule, once. It is kind of annoying as you have to be in isolation for a couple of days afterwards and there are restrictions on your movements for about two weeks as you are radioactive, but it's not painful or ongoing. And it's not even done in all cases. I had a very large nodule (10.5cm in total; 6.7cm malignancy) and some spread to lymph nodes, so probably a more serious case that average. But even that wasn't too bad.

To be honest, the worst part is the worry.

  • Hi, I'm new to this and have just been diagnosed but very interested in how you are doing.

    All the best
