Operation delay due to COVID 19

Hi everyone,

First post on here!  My mum has been diagnosed with breast cancer (Monday 8th June) and has been told due to COVID 19, all operations are on hold / delayed so she may be put on tamoxifen in the meantime. She has another appointment next Thursday 18th June where she will discuss the outcome of her biopsy etc.

I've done a bit of research and can see that in usual circumstances, she would have a lumpectomy followed then by radiotherapy and then tamoxifen for the next 5 years to prevent the cancer from returning. I just worry that things will get worse if she doesn't have her lumpectomy operation ASAP?! We have looked into going private and they have told us when they re-start private operations they will be under isntruction from another hospital and there is a long waiting list.

We are based in South Wales so if anyone has any advice that would be soooo much appreciated!

Thanks - Jess

  • Hello Jess,

I am sorry to hear your mum's operation has been delayed because of Covid19. Cancer Research UK has had many calls and emails from people who are concerned that their treatment has been or might be cancelled during this difficult time and I understand that this must be worrying for you and your mum. I’m sorry I cannot give you more detailed information about your situation. You will need to contact your specialist nurse, doctor, or GP.  Your specialist will take into account the risks of delaying treatment and balance these against how serious it would be for your mum if she became infected by the virus or did not have specialist services available during or shortly after her treatment.

Things may change as the situation changes.  As you are based in Wales, you can find the most up to date information about coronavirus specific to Wales here. We also have detailed information on our website on coronavirus and cancer which you can read on this page. In particular you will find a useful section on coronavirus and cancer treatment here.

Try and talk to your mum's medical team if you can as they will work with you to determine the best course of action in each individual situation.

I hope that your mum's operation won't be delayed for too long. If you had any questions, you are welcome to give our nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
