On and off nipple inversion

Ok so I'm 16 and I suffer from moderate anxiety, since mid March my left nipple has inverted 3/4 times, I am on the pill and think it could just be hormones but I find it difficult to sleep and don't know when I should be worried about this, there's no new lumps or bumps I could feel and they don't hurt and if I touch my nipple once it's gone inverted it comes back out. I am scared to tell my mother because she also suffers with anxiety and I don't want her to worry it it ends up being nothing, apart from that I'm in perfect health and not feeling any different since this started, I just want a second opinion so I can sleep easier! Thank you to anyone who replies!

  • Hi there, totally understand why you're worried but I had the exact same symptom earlier in the year. I'm 27 and my nipple randomly inverted and then came back out when I touched it - I took a photo of it and showed it to my GP. She referred me for breast screening and I was absolutely terrified. They gave me an ultrasound and there were no lumps behind my nipple or elsewhere in my breast. The specialist I saw there explained that random nipple inversion can happen and is usually hormonal - pill or menstruation related. She reassured me that there was nothing to be concerned about but to come back if I had any other new symptoms. It really put my mind at ease. This is just my experience with it so if you are concerned I would definitely go to your GP as they are best placed to advise you. Get yourself checked out for your own peace of mind but it's really good that you're aware of your breasts and any changes that happen!

    Good luck xxxx

    Hi Ruby.

Welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear of the symptoms that have brought you here. I agree with parker_girl, have a word with your Mum and get this seen by your GP. Hopefully, at your age this is hormonal and, nothing to worry about. However, breast cancer is not usually painful, so you are just as well to get this checked out.

PLease keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much! It hasn't happened since and my skin was getting bad around the same time (hormonal acne) so that was the problem, thank you so much for putting my mind at ease, really means a lot ! ️

    Hi Ruby,

Many thanks for letting us know how you got on. I am delighted to hear that nothing untoward has happened since and, that the changes in your skin were due to hormonal acne.

I sincerely hope that you don't get any further problem with your nipples, but, if you do, make sure to get it checked out with your GP.

Hopefully, you can relax now and get back to living your life.

I am so happy for you.

    Kind regards,

Last night I discovered that my right nipple was inverted, I've never noticed this before! I'm 26 and on the pill. I can't feel any lump but naturally I've been anxious all day and googling like mad. I've filled out an econsult and waiting for the drs to come back on Monday but I'm just petrified it's something serious - sometimes it's like a little dimple then other times it was completely inverted and like a little hole. When I'm cold etc it comes back out as normal. I feel like my breast is warm to the touch but I don't know if I'm just imagining things now. I must've looked at it about 20 times today alone inspecting it.

    Hoping for some reassurance!

    Hi there,

A very warm welcome to the forum that nobody really wants to join. I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and am glad to her that you have already set the wheels in motion to get this checked out.

Our minds tend to go into overdrive when we discover something like this, but no amount of worry is going to change the outcome.

It is unusual, although not impossible for someone as young as you to have cancer. Try to find some solace in the fact that only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will be diagnosed with cancer.

Please do not be tempted to consult 'Dr Google', as this will only scare you further.

Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Here's hoping that nothing untoward is found.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
