Fibroadenoma

Does anyone have any experience with fibroadenomas? Do they ever just suddenly shrink and disappear or am I stuck with it forever?

I have a fibroadenoma on my left breast that is about 2 x 3cm that has stuck around ever since I had an ultrasound on it 8 months ago. Whenever I remember it exists I get a bit distressed but surgical removal seems a bit extreme since it's a diagnosed benign lump. Any guidance or words of reassurance would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi prl19,

If you haven't already, please read the disclaimer at the bottom.

Fibroadenomas are, as I'm sure you're aware, pretty common for a woman to get at some point in their life. They certainly can, and often do, shrink or disappear over time. However, it is certainly possible for them to persist. There really is no real way to tell. If it is giving a lot of discomfort then surgical removal is the preferred route to get rid of it if a vacuum assisted excision (VAE) isn't possible, but I can see why you would be reluctant to consider this! However, if it is really providing you discomfort, it's certainly worth discussing this with your doctors, to see if the benefits outweigh any risks. Do keep an eye on it and whether it changes in size and remember to carry out your usual break checkups regularly. I know the breast cancer charity website do have pages on fibroadenomas if you wish to research more, that is your best place! All the best.
