Abnormal smear

Hi, today I received 2 letters, one with an appointment to attend a colposcopy appointment (which of course I opened first and panicked) and the other to say my results showed I was hpv positive and had abnormal cells. The appointment for the colposcopy is over 3 months away! I'm terrified of waiting that long and scared of the results. My last smear 3 years ago showed abnormal cells but hpv negative and was told to wait 3 years as there was nothing to worry about. Role on 3 years with another bad result and I've gone into panic mode and due to covid I have to wait 3 months

  • Hello !

so sorry you're going through this anxious time !

may I ask what level of abnormalities you have ! It usually says borderline / mild / moderate / severe , on your letter .

my first 2 smears were normal , then my third in 2018 was HPV+ and borderline changes . I had colposcopy and all was done no treatment needed just another smear in 1 year .

i was a few months late having that next smear ( March this year ) , and after 8+ weeks of waiting the hospital phoned today to get me in for colposcopy on Monday . I later phoned my doctors to check what my results actually were and they are now severe changes so of course I'm petrified and also more so at how quick it is all being processed .

i haven't even received the letter myself yet !

if yours are borderline then I really wouldn't worry too much at this point as that is the earliest stage of changes and these mostly go back to normal by your next smear . I know it's hard though I remember back to that time the anxiety was bad but nothing like what I feel today .

i hope you are ok xxx

  • Hi sricketts5, thank you for your reply. It says low grade so I presume it's mild?

I'm so sorry you are going through this a second time, I've been reading up and even the severe abnormalities aren't cancer so please try not to worry as you are getting the treatment early. I know that's easy to say, especially with me panicking over a mild version. If you need a chat I'm here, I really hope you go on ok on Monday, good luck (not that you will need it) and I'll be thinking of you. Thank you again for the reply, it has calmed me down, take care xx

  • Hi again Tilly .

ok low grade hopefully you won't need any treatment  , and the fact that your appointment is so far away would suggest they aren't too worried so hopefully that helps put your mind at rest , however I know it adds to the stress having to wait so long and not get it over and done with !

yes my sister had CIN3 a few years back and had to have lletz so I am assuming / hoping that that's what I'll end up having too . I will let you know how it goes !

thanks so much for your reply it sure is better talking to someone about it ,

    take care speak soon x

  • It sure is good to talk to someone

lots of luck for tomorrow, speak to you tomorrow if you're feeling ok x

  • Hi Tilly !

so I went in today and did end up having lletz . They didn't say much I was a nervous wreck and didn't ask any questions , but to me my cervix did not look right at all . But what do I know ? I could see a bit of blood coming out from my cervix that worried me . I've had very slight bleeding between periods 3 times but this is the only 'symptom' . I'm also high risk HPV .

i just have to wait for my results now but the consultant who did the procedure had said I was tested as moderate high grade on my smear but not sure if that was still the same or now severe . As I said I tense up so literally just nod and don't ask then wish I did after .

with the current circumstances I just wanted to be in the hospital the least amount of time , it was a bit of a ghost town with tape everywhere !

so just a wait and see now ! Feeling a bit crampy but other than that I'm ok . I'm dreading another long wait for results now .

speak soon , take care x

  • Hi sricketts5

I was wondering if you had had any results?

I have recently been to GP as had brown discharge mid cycle a couple of times. She did swabs and smear. Swabs were clear but she phoned yesterday to say HPV and abnormal smear so need to go for coloscopy (sp). I am petrified. She said I would get a letter but havent had it yet. I am convinced I have cervical cancer because what else could explain these things.

    Thanks

    Bec

  • Hiya Bec !

no I'm still waiting but it's only been 11 days and she said up to 4 weeks . I'm kinda hoping that's good news as it doesn't seem that the consultant sent my biopsy off as urgent ! So I'm sure she wasn't too worried at what she saw . That's how I'm thinking anyway !

I'm so sorry you're going through this anxious time ! But at least you're on the right track to getting it dealt with . Just to help put your mind at rest the colposcopy in itself is nothing to worry about , it doesn't hurt and you don't feel much . I had my treatment there and then and it wasn't too bad either but different clinics have different rules .

i did have slight bleeding in between my periods a couple of times and I do remember it being brown once , I think it's just 'older' blood , But I think there can be many reasons for this . do you know if your results were mild / moderate / severe ? Or low / high grade ?

i don't want to say try not to worry because I know how hard that is I'm the biggest worrier ever ! But try to keep yourself busy to take your mind off it . I was quite lucky as I had the call with results on the Friday and given the appointment for the Monday but the weekend was still a stressful time .

i hope it all gets sorted for you ASAP and you get your appointment through soon !

    take care xx

  • Hi

Just got my appointment through for 28th May. There was no real information other than I would need a leetz.

So I phoned GP and asked. It wasn't my Dr but another one and she said it is moderate High GrDade dykorasis (sp). She said they would have to remove them as they are very unlikely to go back to normal on their own.

I am now petrified as others on these chats with similar symptoms and results have had biopsy and it is cancer and not just changes.

I don't know how I can do this waiting and then preparing to be told I would need a hysterectomy if I have cancer. I was hoping to try for a baby this year .

Thanks for getting back to me.

    Bec

  • Hi again Bec !

glad you have had your letter and result but sorry that it has not put your mind at ease at all . You have the same result as me moderate high grade - however high grade comes in 2 forms - moderate and severe so I was a little comforted when mine was moderate and not the most severe .

those are also what I had removed and it didn't take long not very painful if at all tbh just an uncomfortable thought more than anything . These cells are only pre cancerous , although I've done the same as you and googled and found so many sad stories and on here but there are also tons more with people similar to us who had the lletz and then the all clear . Also my sister had the most severe cells removed CIN3 and that was 3 years ago she had her most recent smear last year and it was all clear with no sign of HPV . So let's just keep everything crossed !

ill let you know as soon as I get my results back and I hope all goes well with your colposcopy and lletz .

    here to chat anytime ,

    take care x

  • Hi

I had my colposcopy today. The Dr was very nice she said she could see a small area of moderate changes. She removed these and said she was confident that it was sorted. They have to send the cells off to be tested but she seemed unconcerned it was anything more sinister. My GP has said she could see ectropion but this Dr said she couldn't see any real sign of it just a normal looking cervix.

Obviously there is still the concern about the results from the tissue she took but she made me feel so much better about everything.

    Hope you are well.

    Bec
