Terrified to go to the doctors

Hi, 

I am 36 and have never had a smear and i have started with some symptoms i am really worried about. For the past 7 days i have had a constant dull back ache and pain like period pain constantly. The pain goes down into my legs too. I know i need to go to the doctors but i am terrified of having any kind of physical examination. I feel so silly admitting it because i know that the alternative could be so much worse.

Even if my symptoms are not as serious as cancer, i am still too terrified to go to the doctor. Please, please can anyone help me bite the bullet and go to the doctors??  I cant tell my mum or sister as i dont want them to worry.

Please help me to be brave :(

    Hi there ...

    I can empathise just how scary it is ... but we've been where you are now .. and on many occasions had to "bite the bullet" and many times it was fine ... only once was it positive ... so at the end of the day .. it's only you can make that choice  ... like you said .. the alternative is even worse .. doing nothing , when there's a big chance it's something else that can be put right ..

    So do nothing and stay in panic mode ... or like you say bite the bullet and it may be o.k ... it's a no brainer really ... your not alone, we've all been there ... x

    i couldnt read and run I had to reply - please go and get seen. I'm your age and never had a smear . I'm going ASAP. My mother had gastric cancer that went undetected and it contributed to her passing. My auntie had breast cancer too.. so I'm  going to have a smear and breast examination ASAP. I truly hate doctors and hospital but it can be necessary to go.

    Hi Claire

    Please try to find the courage to go to get checked. It’s really not as bad as you think and will hopefully put your mind at rest. It’s not necessarily cancer, and could well be something less serious but you’ll never know until you see the doctor. 

    I went a long time with no smears and ignored symptoms and have had almost 2 years of dealing with cervical cancer. I would love to go back in time and save myself what I’ve been through but I can’t.

    Please don’t be like me for the sake of a short visit to the doctor and an examination. Bite the bullet and do it. Please believe me when I say the alternative, if it’s cancer, is much, much worse.

    Thank yoi for your reply, you're right. I just keep thinking about how i will be judged for not looking after myself and have brought this on myself. X

    I hadn't gone for my smears either. I am very anxious about everything and the thought of it embarrassed me.

    I started having some mid cycle brown discharge and so managed to get the courage to go to the Dr. Since then I have been referred for colposcopy as have hpv and abnormal cellls.

    I don't want to discourage you by my results not being great. I want you to know you are not the only one. There are lots of women who feel the same.

    I am so very scared but i had to overcome as treatment is better than not and things getting worse. The GP was not judgemental at all she just did the tests and asked me questions about my symptoms.
