Shadow on my right lung

I have been feeling a little breathless over the past year and went to to see my doctor. He informed me that nothing was wrong and I was probaly just anxious with all the latest panic over this virus. I explained that I was anxious recently but this has been happening for over a year. He insisted everything was ok and I had nothing to worry about. I told him that did not make sense and I was quite worried so he referred me to a respiratory nurse, I got the feeling this was to get me out of his room so he could see the next patient.

Nurse rings me up a week later and says that my symptoms sound like COPD or asthma and sends me for an xray.

Xray shows up a shadow on my right lung and doctor wants me to go for scan.

First thing I do is google shadow on lung and I am faced with loads of information about cancer. Has anyone else had a similar xray show up a shadow and is it always cancer that causes this. So worried this is stopping me sleeping and I spend all day worried I have COPD or cancer and if this is the case is there any treatment. Any help or advise would be really appreciated.

  • Hi Kaz, a shadow on your lung doesn't mean you have cancer, they can be from other problems like pneumonia or infection.  The scan will show more of what is going on and you are lucky that it is happening sooner rather than later.  The reason for this is that my husband had x rays, five over five months, each time we were told it was an infection until it was confirmed as lung cancer, so if we had had an early scan things would have been much better.  Please don't look up symptoms it doesn't help and causes so much worry.  So stay calm as stress makes your breathing worse and post again if you feel upset or worried.  Best wishes, Carol x
