CV19 and past cancer

My wife had breast cancer 9 years ago having a mastectomy and removal of lymph nodes. Thankfully she has been fine ever since. Now with all that's going on I am concerned that she has a reduced immunity and seek advice about whether she should self isolate. She is a headteacher and in constant contact with children and adults. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

  • Hi Stewie,

My understanding is that those with reduced immunity are patients currently receiving chemotherapy or immunotherapy or have recently finished treatment. Also, patients with certain blood cancers.

I enquired regarding this as I had a full node clearance from my groin & pelvis 10 years ago & I have been in remission since then. Lymph node removal does not cause reduced immunity, except in the area where the nodes were removed - in which case we are susceptible to localised infection ie. cellulitis, but reduced lymph nodes won't affect our immunity to the virus. I hope this helps,

  • Thanks Angie that has put both our minds at rest.
