Breast cancer

I have recently undergone a mastectomy with an expander implant

  • Hi Irene...

And welcome to our little chat place that we all say anything (nearly) and others know how you feel ..

I've been on here nearly 3 years, and lots of us breast lasses have come on , and lots gone back to their life post cancer.... trouble is we hear the sad outcomes on t.v , but there are lots living through and after ..

It's deff not easy ... it's like a scary rollercoaster ride,  one where we don't know when we get off .. but if you can live in the day and try not to do the what ifs ... and it's o.k to feel scared .. don't know anyone that wasn't.. but you'll always find someone on here to help you through .. I had a grade 3 and total right masectomy ... but I'm still here .. so hold on in there ..... sending you positive thoughts ... Chrissie x

  • Many thanks Chrissie for your welcome.  I know its early days, 5 weeks since my op.  Doing ok but was hoping to be a little more comfortable.  The implant still seems tender and I have a small seroma under my armpit.  My monthly appointment with my surgeon was last Tuesday and he was very happy with progress and hopefully able to start inflation on the 9th April.  I must admit thought things would be a little more settled, I seem to go from one ache to another, back ache, slight strange feeling in my arm which varies  day to day. Also get tied quickly. The small seroma is also uncomfortable, but my surgeon doesn't want me to have it drained as it's already been drained 3 times, fluid was nice and clear showing no infection.  I would be interested if others out there experienced this.  I'm very fortunate that there were no signs of cancer in my lymph nodes and only a minimum amount found in the breast which has been completely removed.

  • Hi ya ...

Yea I had my masectomy scar drained a couple of times ... at  one point thought my boob was growing back ...  and got loads of fluid off it ... it does take time to heal .. and the arm they took my lymph nodes from was more tender then the scar .. and it's taken a long time for the use of that arm to come back .. just  baby steps ...  and I got lots of weird feelings from arm for a while ..  but then we've had a major op and it does take a while ..

I still get tired easy ... lots of us , get exorsted quickly .. and that takes time too .. so just take it gently .. and you will get there ... Chrissie x

  • Thanks Chrissie  it's reassuring, will take your advice and take it easy.

  • Hi I'm just saying Hi as I had an expander fitted 3 weeks ago and camt find any normal information on it, I thought the pain would settle but i feel the expander is digging in and my whole breast aches, did you find this? Thanks

  • Hi Lisa1977

I know just how you feel, I'm 16 week now with the expander, it does get a little better as you get use to it, but it's been a very uncomfortable 16 weeks. Tomorrow will be my first inflation, that's if all is ok, the treatment should have started in March but cancelled due to the virus.  I was told it would go a little flat which it as and can only describe it as feeling like a hards squashed plastic milk bottle in a hard sling.  I'm very small breasted so hopefully it won't take that many treatments, then a other 2 months before the expander is removed and replaced with the silicone implant.  Let's hope this feels more like a breast, 3rd op to argument my other breast to balance me up.  Will keep you posted, but if I can help any further don't hesitate to get in touch.  Take care
