Advice on keeping my child off school.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I’m currently about to start cycle 3 chemo on Tuesday for myeloma cancer. I’m already really tired and weak as it’s been doubled to prepare me for a stem cell transplant. I have an 11 year old son and with what’s going on with the Coronavirus it’s giving me pannick attacks sending him to school . With my condition would I be in trouble keeping him off and self isolating ourselves ? He’s told me the teacher isn’t checking if all the children wash hands etc also. Many thanks for reading

  • Hello Clare-k,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I think given your situation and particular circumstances, it would be a good idea to speak to the head of the school and explaining your situation and seeing whether they would be happy for you to keep your son at home. I can completely understand the stress this is causing you - our nurses have a helpline you are welcome to ring if you have any questions 0808 800 4040 it is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

We also have information on our website on Coronavirus and cancer which you can find on this page.

Wishing you the best of luck with the start of your chemotherapy treatment.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello lucie.

Thakyou so much for your advice. Il give the helpline a ring on Monday and also ring and speak to the head at my sons school. Also hoping there’s a few parents on here with a similar scenario . I’m wanting to self isolate as much as possible imbetween my chemo but feel it’s a total waste of time if all my family at home ( Hubby and son ) aren’t fully involved.

    Thanks again. Claire.
