Ovarian cyst

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me!

In 2018 I had an MRI, which found an ovarian cyst on my left ovary. I had an ultrasound, and they couldn't find anything. I was told that my pill would and can cause the cysts.so I came off it, and have been for a year.

So as of recent I've stated paying more attention to my periods and I have the pain in my left ovary always a week before I'm due on and the week afterwards. Its incredibly uncomfortable, my left leg goes numb, I feel constantly bloated, and I can barely eat much without feeling full. I also cannot stop going to the toilet a lot.

Sorry if this is TMI but it panicked me, I recently started bleeding heavily, but I've just been on my period, but it was more as if someone had cut me. I'm sure something was wrong.

I went to the drs today, which they've done loads of tests, practically a smear test, but I feel like i haven't any answers.

I'm being sent for a ultrasound (possibly an internal). I'm 22 years of age, but I feel as though I've been made out to be "imagining it". And I'm so sure it's there, but they can't feel anything but I seriously can.

Its worrying me a lot and I just would like someone to put my mind at ease!

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Rebecca and welcome to the forum.

It must be very frustrating not having any answers at the moment but once you've had the ultrasound and all your test results have been looked at together you'll hopefully be a step closer to finding out what's causing your symptoms.

Hopefully some of our members will be along soon to offer their support and help put your mind at ease but I just wanted to let you know that we're thinking of you and will be hoping for good news.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you so much for your reply, it means a lot!

  • Hi i have a very similar situation going on right now. Got an ultrasound dcan tomorrow and am very worried especially with all thats going on right now

Any updates on your situation?  Xx

  • Hi,

Unfortunately no updates, my scan was cancelled due to the pandemic...

I'm still aware of my cyst, and because I am due on my period it has been worse this week. Sorry if too much info, but I find I constantly need to wee, but I am constipated, i have bloated so much because of it.

All of my tests came back fine which is good.

Try not to worry yourself, it's hard I know!

I'm still currently trying to find things to help, I did find when I sent for my first ultrasound they tell you there and then if they can find anything! A lot of the time the cyst has gone, and they tell you to carry on as normal. I've been told multiple things, where I was told the pill can cause ovarian cysts, to they can stop them. I havent been on the pill for a year, and I must admit my cyst is still there.  Essentially I've always been told, unless I want children they wont do anything about it!

I'm convinced now I suffer from endometriosis as I'm always in pain for at least 2 weeks of every month. The problem is it isnt easy to find, so keep pushing if your concerned. And listen to your body.

Given the situation right now, I know of a few people who are pregnant/have recently had babies, and they have said the hospitals are incredibly safe but also quiet! So I can imagine, you will be very safe having your scan tomorrow!

I hope everything goes okay for you tomorrow! I'm always here if you need a chat and I hope this helps even a little!

    Xxx

  • Thanks for your reply! Im still just so anxious about it all. I didnt know of anything until a week ago i had pain in my lower abdomen on my right side which got qorse over 3 days. Then i had spotting and the pain went. The spotting turned into bleeding and its not my period as i just had my period 2 weeks ago. I was sure i was ovulating. Well anyways nhs111 told me to go a&e which i went to and saw gynae for an exam but referred me for a emergency scan for tomorrow. I think i might have a burst cyst now or worse. So worried.

Bleeding has finally slowed down but still there. Does yours cause you any bleeding? X

  • That to me sounds like an ovarian cyst that has burst but obviously I'm not professional. I was incredibly worried about mine and it's been at least 8 weeks since it happened, and I'm absolutely fine.

That was the first time it happened for me, and I did the same but didnt wanna go to A&E as I was terrified.

I had exactly the same, and was asked multiple times if it could go been my period yet I knew it was not. My scan was an emergency one too, but got cancelled cause it was as soon as we went into lockdown. I bled for at least 2 weeks. It's all a sign of ovarian cysts. I never have a regular period now, it's always so heavy when I'm due on and I bleed for at least 2/3 weeks of every month. As worrying as it is, and I imagine you have googled it like i had done, depending on the size of the cyst the say it's normal in women (although we know it isnt) mine was the size of a golf ball, and I'm sure its burst a few times and came back, and I've had mine for 2 years or so now.

I find I get very very poorly when it's my period. And I bleed a lot during and after sex, which is quite scary. If you take more notice of it, you kind of get to know its habits in a way. So I can feel it pushing on my lower back, and it sits on a nerve, I'm a hairdresser so I'm usually on my feet 12 hours a day, and I'm very much aware of it! But I bloat awfully, for a long time I used to wonder if I was pregnant and realise it was the bloating because of the cyst that causes it, you might notice aswell you may not be able to eat much, essentially cysts arent meant to be there, there isnt any room for it so you can imagine its pushing on all your organs around it.

It's an awful thing to have x

  • So sorry you went through this too. The bleeding for weeks is so worrying and awful im sure for you! Mine has been for 4 days so far. I had the same where docs told me its probably my period. Did you have low iron and vit d at all for the past 2 years since u found out about the cyst?

I think youre right about it possibly being a burst cyst. Docs said that it couldnt be as a burst cyst causes excruciating  pain. Which i had but it went after instarted bleeding.

Just dont know if they'll see it on the scan and if it will naturally heal up. This all so worrying and unknown to me. Yes i have been guilty of googling it too and worrying myself even more. I even think it could be endo too..

You said this was 8 weeks ago now and youre fine now (happy to hear that :-)) but did you bleed untill your next period? Xx

Thanks so much for replying just terrified of my scan tomorrow. Xx

  • It was worrying, but I guess now I have come to terms with it. I'm sorry you're having to go through it also, but its comforting knowing I'm not the only one! Yes I'm incredibly low in vitamin D, I take vitamin D daily for the rest of my life, although I'm not low in iron my mum has had the same problems and is low in both.

Honestly the burst cyst is unimaginable pain and honestly I understand how you feel it's a absolutely awful when it does happen! I've been told by other people that ultrasounds do not help, and dont show endo or the cysts a lot of times. When I found out about my cyst I automatically thought it was going to burst so I was on tender hooks. But I guess I've come to terms with it not happening and if it does the hospital will do something about it!

Yes I bled until my next period i have bled previously for at least 6 weeks on end and that was a while back. Sometimes googling does help, but there sn't a lot you can do.

You're more than welcome, if you ever need to message me about it or you have any worries get in contact with me! Xxx

  • Thanks so much for the replies. Yes it is comforting to know we're not alone in this. Wow bleeding for 6 weeks must have been horrendous for you!

They took my bloods when i went hospital to check if i need a blood transfusion as i had lost alot of blood while also being  aneamic. Started my iron tablets straight away though.

Just a quick last question, do cysts grow back again?

Im just thinking now if it doesnt show on the scan will it come back.

    Really appreciate your replies xx

  • You're more than welcome!

Yeah so sometimes they burst, and sometimes they just go away, because essentially cysts are classed as a missed period.

This was meant to be my third scan, and everytime they have said the cyst has gone, but I'm 100% sure something is there. One of my friends suffer from endo, and she said I had to ask for a laparoscomy which is a small internal keyhole operation that will look and see if they can see anything inside. Because In my case I've found drs are just thinking I'm being dramatic, but its awful.

You're most welcome, good luck for tomorrow and I hope you get some answers that help settle your mind xx
