What now: breast results clear but lump still there.

I found a lump in my breast and the gp referred to the local Breast clinic for investigation. When there the consultant found an enlarged lymph node in my armpit that was also shown on ultrasound. The actual breast lump did not show on ultrasound and a biopsy was taken. The notes I've had back list my breast lump as P3 but all results as clear and biopsy showed "normal breast tissue" So what now? Will this lump go away by itself? How long should I leave it? Has anyone else had this experience? My head is mashed

    Hi Elsmum,

Welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear that you do not seem reassured that there is no cancer in your breast following your tests at the breast clinic.

It is not unusual for people to have benign lumps, which may or may never go away. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the same breast. I have also had a lump in my other breast which was firm and attached to my breast tissue, but this was benign. I know that it is difficult to accept that you are all clear.

The advice given at this stage is to try and accept that you've been lucky and get on with your life. At the same time, carry out a regular monthly check on your breasts and, see your GP if you notice any changes in your lump.

I sincerely hope that you can come to terms with this diagnosis and, that you have no further bother with your lump.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks for taking time to reply. I feel awful that I can't just relax that it's all clear. I know I'm very lucky to be in this situation compared to others such as yourself.

Im so paranoid that maybe they got it wrong, that the biopsy was taken from the wrong place. You say some lumps never go? I'm sorry if this reads as dramatic, I feel so silly but I just wish I couldn't still feel it to play on my mind. You gear yourself up for the worst news and although it's a weight off I can't help panic.....what if?
I need to try and relax, just go back if any change to it. I don't want to be a pain but it's just hard to switch off from it.

    Hi Elsmum,

I'm surprised that your consultant never gave you any guidance about your lump. If they have carried out an ultrasound and a biopsy and both are clear with these tests, it is unlikely that they have missed anything as the biopsy id guided by the ultrasound.

There is a poem that says it all for you at present. I cannot remember who wrote it, but it goes:-

    "Never trouble trouble,

    'til trouble troubles you,

    For you'll only double trouble,

    and trouble others too."

If you cannot learn to relax it might be worth talking to a counsellor. Obviously, if tyhe lump starts to grow or change, you need to go straight back to your GP for another referral.

I sincerely hope that you remain clear and have no further trouble.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
