microcalcifications

Hi everyone,

You all sound like mighty warriors from what i've been reading, so hats off to you all.

I'm 53 and have just had my first mammogram on 24th Feb. I was sent a letter 2 days ago inviting me for further tests next week as theyve found calcification! Now, all the literature i've read says not to worry as this comes up a lot and they play cautious as they have nothing to compare your first test to.

I'm not panicking but would like to know if this happened to some/lots of you on your first mammogram.

Thanking you in advance

  • Hello Fowler and welcome to the forum.

About 4% of women are recalled following a mammogram and this rate is slightly higher if it's your first time so try not to worry too much. You might like to have a look at this blog on the Breat Cancer Now website.

Breast calcifications are very common and usually aren't of any cause for concern but it's sensible that the hospital want to just check these out particularly as they don't have any previous mammograms to compare against.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses ahead of your appointment then do give them a call on 0808 800 4040 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm). I'm sure that they will be able to offer you some further reassurance.

    Best wishes,
