Mole Biopsy at age 19

Hello everyone :)

This Tuesday I went in for a 'mole check'.

When I arrived for the appointment the Nurse that was there to take the pictures (for referall) was laughing at me - and saying how improbable it was that I could get skin cancer at just 19 years of age!

I showed her the mole on my leg (which I've had for a very long time now); and she soon stopped laughing.

Well today I recieved a phone call from the dermatology clinic; they've told me that I've been given a 2 week referall. I don't know what this means for me - and I'm still not sure what the appointment might entail.... Will they remove it there and then if they think it's cancer?

  • Hi,

I'm sorry you have been referred to dermatology but it's good that your mole is getting checked out. 75% of referrals are given a clean bill of health so hopefully yours will be fine.

At the appointment they will examine your mole with a dermascope which will show if there are any suspicious cells. If a biopsy is decided on it will probably be arranged for a later date.

It is unusual for someone so young to have skin cancer so the odds are on your side. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
