Breast implants

Hi, I've just been referred by my dr to the breast clinic & am currently waiting for an appointment. I am 45 & recently found three lumps (a larger one just above my nipple & two smaller ones below my nipple) in my left breast. I had some breast pain for a while but I put it down to heavy lifting from my job in farming.

I also have silicone implants that are now coming up to twelve years old (over the muscle for volume after I had my children & not big). While there is lots of info on the net I can't really find any info on what happens if you have implants, does it make diagnosis harder  & if cancer is diagnosed what is likely to happen or be suggested?
please don't judge me. I am already scared enough from knowing I have three lumps in my breast. I am just trying to find out relevant information.

  • Hello Cooper1974 and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently found some breast lumps. I can hear from your post that you're feeling really worried about what these may be and what may happen.

At a breast clinic appointment you will usually have a breast examination, followed by one or more of the following tests: mammogram, ultrasound, core biopsy and fine needle aspiration (FNA). You can read more about these procedures here

Mammograms can be less effective in women who have breast implants because the X-rays cannot "see" through the implant to the breast tissue behind it but don't worry about this. The staff at the clinic are experts and will be used to regularly seeing women who have implants in situ.

In terms of "what happens if?" that will very much depend on your results. We know that it's normal for women to be worried about their results. For the moment try to take each step as it comes and not look too far ahead. It will help you to feel less anxious.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses before your appointment then you're most welcome to give them a call. I'm sure that they will be able to offer some advice and support. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that this helps. Please do let us know how you get on at your appointment.

    Best wishes,
