Smear test under general anasetic

Having read several posts on women experiencing very painful smear test, having the same problem myself, I was recently referred to the Womens hospital (Gynocology) over a problem after menopause, I am 63 and never given birth, I asked at the appointment if it is possible to have the smear test under general anasetic whilst looking at a Cyst on my womb, to which they have said yes I am very happy to say. I would advice any woman to be 'pushy' with their GP and request to be referred to the Gynocology unit at a hospital, where I think they will give general or local anasetic for the procedure, especially when you explain how anxious it makes you and physically intolerable. The hospital also told me that the GP 's have very little idea on how to carry out the smear test for the comfort and less pain caused to the patient !

  • Hi Ratty and welcome to the forum.

I'm really glad the hospital have agreed to give you a general anaesthetic for your smear. I'm sure other members who are in a similar situation will really appreciate the advice and keep it in mind when arranging to have theirs done.

I hope everything goes well when the time comes Ratty.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks for this. I will ask my GP, otherwise I won't be having one I'm afraid. Far far too painful for me to the point I I nearly passed out. I have 2 children, but by c/section.
