Do i have chemo or not?

I was diagnosed with grade 2 breast cancer in december which had started to grow outside the duct .I had the mass removed and some nodes to test .Cancer was found in 1 of the 3 nodes and was a macro metases which is a larger amount than the guideline.I decided not to have all the nodes cleared as they said it was unlikely to be in any others and radio would sort it if there was.My current situtation is i have been told i defiantly need radio and hormone treatment as my cancer was fed by my estrogen. My extra options are,

1. A injection to turn off my ovaries which is to stop by body creating as much estrogen as possible to try starve anything that could start to grow.

2 . 6 rounds of 3 weekly chemo to kill any stray cancer cells so they have no chance of growing, they have said benefits out weigh the risk.My head is mashed i am really struggling to choose i have to tell them my choice monday any advice would be very welcome.

  • Hi Jojo

Obviously I don't know your full background and all the ins and outs, but if it were me I'd go for the chemotherapy. Have you been put in touch with anyone to help you with your decision, maybe a breast cns or a Macmillan nurse?

  • Yes i have mcmillan nurse but its still my choice and im really struggling. All my family say go for it take every thing offered to ensure it wont return. But my best friend who is a nurse has said she would avoid chemo if possible so im so confused

  • My mom was a nurse (she died 24.12.19) and when she found out she had to have chemo she was upset. I think she was seeing it from the point of view of a nurse, and maybe that's what your best friend is doing too. I'm not a nurse, so I didn't see it that way. All I saw with my mom was the chance that it would fight the cancer and buy her some time. Which in her case it did.
Maybe try looking at your situation differently. If a friend came to you with this decision to make what would you advise her to do. I can't begin to think what you must be feeling. I hope I've not upset you x

  • No you havent upset me thankyou for your advice sorry about your mum xxx

  • Thank you. I hope you are able to make your decision and be confident in it. Xx

    Hi Jojo,

This is such an awkward position to be in. Have you asked your consultant or oncologist what they would do if their mum had your type of cancer, health conditions, etc? I doubt that they would have suggested chemo if they didn't think that this was the best option for you.

It is so difficult to decide when you don't have the medical knowledge to weigh up the pros and cons of both options. Draw up a list of questions before your next visit, so that you can have a frank discussion, which should empower you to make an educated choice. Sadly, only you and you alone can make the final choice. Ask about the side-effects of both options and, what percentage survival is predicted with both.

Whichever option you choose, I hope that it is the right one for you. Please let us know what you decide. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • i so feel for you, i dont know if this is any help or not, but my sister has ductual cancer grade 3 but in the early stages. she is having 21 weeks of weekly chemo followed by mastectomy then radiotherapy.

so far she has had 3 lots and has minimal side effects.

i feel if they have given you a choice, i would opt  for chemo. all the luck to you x

  • Thank you yes i think i am going to opt for the chemo want to give myself every chance to stop this terrible disease from returning .
