Nipple discharge

Hi I'm wondering if anyone has some advice,

I was referred to the breast clinic after having some nipple discharge from my right breast and I had an ultrasound on Wednesday which looked fine and the dr had no concerns however tonight I have noticed the discharge has changed to blood. Should I be concerned if the ultrasound was clear?

Not sure whether to go back to the gp or not. I have a slight raise under my right armpit but the gp was never concerned about that, but it causes me some issues and is currently giving me a burning sensation. My mum had breast cancer at the age of 42 and her sister had it also so obviously I get concerned. Many thanks

    Hi Danielle,

I am so sorry to hear about your syptoms. It sounds as if it might be advisable to tell your GP about this and ask for their advice. Mention the swelling under your arm again too.

I know how worrying this time can be. My mum also had cancer and died 10 years before I was diagnosed. I had a recall after a routine mammogram and, was told that all was fine. A few years later I found a lump. I had a lumpectomy. The following year I discovered another cancer in the same breast and had a double mastectomy.

I sincerely hope that this is something and nothing for you. Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello Danielle

    How are you?

Im sending you a little message to see how you got on at your appointment?

    Thanks

  • Hi thanks for your message. I have actually been to the breast clinic 3 times now as my discharge also turned bloody. I have been told I should take this as my new normal now, because the discharge is not spontaneous and builds up over time so they feel like they shouldn't operate and remove the duct as it's most likely normal ‍♀️ if that changes then I need to be referred back again. Still worrying but I guess there is nothing more I can do.

  • Hey! Did this ever change for you? Did you ever go back? X

  • Hi there, I'm in a similar position and have very small amount of bloody discharge, then it stops for ages, then a bit of yellow and the nothing for months. However, consultant is keen to remove ducts so although I am in bits about having to have surgery and really anxious to the point of non-stop tears I guess I'll have to get it done. But I'm interested that your doctor says that for you, you should view it as your ` new normal'. I am still very tempted to take the wait and see approach. Anyone know of any figures/research on whether duct excision really is necessary? I've no family history of cancer and all ultraounds/mammograms are normal so I'm still not convinced surgery is the best option.

Having read about all the brave folk on the various forums I'm feeling a real fraud and quite ashamed of myself to admitting to such fear and anxiety but hey ho, I guess we all have our different levels. I really wish I could get over myself and feel reassured that surgery is really required in this case.

I will be chatting with the breast care nurse and I cannot fault the kind care and support I have received thus far from our local NHS. They really are wonderful. I even cried down the phone to my consultant's secretary today and she was so kind and understanding. I guess in a way she almost gave me `permission' to be scared and told me that it was perfectly normal to be anxious. I guess the one thing that has come out of all this is the real kindness of strangers and how amazing our NHS is. Wishing all of you lovely folk out there peace and health.

  • Hi Danielle, I have read your post and wondered what has happened in the mean time?  I am debating whether to go through with surgery, have clear/bloody discharge on and off since Oct 2022. Was hoping it would clear up by itself. Not sure if there's a good alternative out there to surgery.

thanks ever so much. Hope you're well.

  • Hi Dan, I finished treatment for breast cancer in June 21, I have developed a crusty nipplr( don't mean  to be gross) I attended the breast clinic last week and was told it looks fine but if it turns to blood to go right back so I would certainly be persistent if your not happy with the advice given, you can't be too careful, equally there may be other reasons for this but I would certainly insist on getting checked properly xxx

  • Hi Kristl and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I know you were hoping to get a reply from Danielle but I've just had a look at their profile and can see they haven't been on the forum since July 2020 so you may not get to find out what happened to them.

If this turns out to be the case then it may be worth reaching out to others on more recent and active discussions about this topic or you can start your own discussion. You can find out how to do this just here.

Making decisions about treatment can be very tough so if you'd like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful, and supportive, and will do all they can to help you figure out what's right for you.

We're thinking of you Kristl and wishing you all the best with what you decide to do next.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
