Hi

Hi I'm new to the forum, am looking for advice, I found a lump in my armpit went to docs they said it's not a gland that's up, so sent me for blood tests, of which came back normal, the doc said if they come back negative I've to ring back and make another emergency appointment to investigate further, what does it mean if bloods were normal, that I've not got cancer?

    Hi Tink,

    Welcome to our forum.

I am not a doctor, just a breast cancer pilgrim. I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that  blood tests can detect cancer anywhere in the body, but should not be relied upon as a conclusive diagnosis. However, the results of a blood test can give the doctor a clue that further tests may be needed. These further tests are carried out in a breast clinic. The 3 most common tests are mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy.

Has this lump been present for long and does it cause any adverse effects? If it is still bothering you, it might be worth going back to your GP, as it might be a swollen lymph node. These can swell with any type of infection, but will usually settle down once the infection has subsided. If your problems persist, it might be worth asking for a referral to the breast clinic just to be sure.

Referral to a clinic is as much to rule out breast cancer as it is to detect it. Only 1 person in every 8 referred will have breast cancer. Do you have any bother with your breasts or is it just under your arm?

The fact that your blood tests came back normal is a good sign, but if you're still worried about it, you're better to make sure.

Please let us know what you decide to do. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
