Grandmother stage 4 lung cancer

Hi all,

My 89 year old Grandmother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer two weeks ago. We are devastated as she appeared very healthly and fit for her age and all she had was a lingering cold and this diagnosis has come as a complete shock. My family and I are due to see the consultant today to discuss treatment options. Without treatment she may not make it until the summer. We have already been told that its unlikely  she will be able to have Immunotherapy as she does not appear to have the receptors needed for it. The consultant said that Chemo may be an option which it what we will be finding out today but in my heart I feel this will not be offered. She does not have great kidney function and although this is never impacted on her day to day I believe its something they check before offering Chemo. I also appreciate that because of her age it would be extra hard on her but Nan is adamant that she would like any treatment possible. I just wondered if anyone has experience of the elderly being offered Chemo. The doctors and nurses have been so lovely and of course there may be very valid reasons why she cant be offered treatment but if it was because of her age and there was any chance she could have it is it worth insisting? Sorry for the ramble guess I am just trying to gather thoughts in advance and think about what we would like to say. Many thanks in advance x

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Jenn although I'm sorry about your nan's diagnosis.

How did the meeting go with the consultant the other day? I do hope chemo was able to be offered but if the news wasn't favourable you could try seeking a second opinion. To find out more just click here.

Hopefully some of our members will be along soon to share their experiences with you but our cancer nurses are also available for a chat on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,
