Essential Thrombocythemia

Thanks so much for these posts everyone. In many ways quite comfoting. I start taking my 'Essential...' 500g tomorrow. A blow in a way, but as someone has said at least it was 'discovered' (via a random blood test) and the chemo pills will assist in keeping me reasonably healthy. There are few things worse than having a stroke, God forbid!

Anyway, thank you everyone. My thoughts are very much with you all!

    Hi Timisoara,

Welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear that you are on your cancer journey too and hope that your tablets help in preventing it from recurring. Have you had any surgery prior to this and, what type and grade of cancer do you have?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks, Jolamine - kind of you. No, no surgery. I'm not expecting any.

Hope you are managing. I'm JAK2. Overproducing plaitlets in my blood. Something to do with bone marrow as well. It's called Essential Thrombocythemia.

    Take care,

    Best wishes,

    Peter

    Hi Timisoara,

This is a rare one and, as far as I can see, is usually left  untreated in the early stages. Are you on any medication to cut down the risk of clotting?

I sincerely hope that your tablets manage to keep this in check for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello

How are you getting on with meds they've given you i m starting my chemo pull next week

    Regards

    Barb

  • Hi Barbara,

I've been taking the meds for two weeks now. To be honest, I haven't felt any side-effects as yet. I see the consultant in two weeks time. Over this month (four weeks) I'm having three blood tests. My main concern is that the meds lower your immune system - particularly chest and urinary, making them susceptible to infection - my two weakest areas. However, infections can be dealt with by antibiotics. What I certainly don't want to happen is a stroke.

I'm now accepting I have this condition. I know this might sound ridiculous, but someone in the medical profession told be that of all the blood disorders Essential Thrombocythemia is probably the best one to get!!!

    Take care - stay strong,

    Peter
