Smear results

Hi,

I have had a letter advising my smear results show an HPV positive result

There are changes in my cervix graded 'high grade severe dyskaryosis'.

I called the colposcopy dept and was told they haven't received my referral yet. When I told her what my letter said she said I will be given an appointment within 2 weeks. Although she cannot book it without my referral coming in

I know the letter says it CAN turn into cancer if untreated and almost all cases of changed are not found to be cancer  what are the statistics of it being cancer?

My last smear was 3 1/2 years ago  and there were no changes detectied then. Can things progress that quickly without detection or other symptoms?

I am just looking for reassurance that this is all fixable! I am trying to be level headed but I'm scared

any advice would be great

  • Hi Marie and welcome to the forum.

We've got some information about screening results on our website just here which I hope will help put your mind at ease about this but if you'd like to talk things through with someone then do give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they are very knowledgeable in this area.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Marie,

hope you're well? I am in exactly the same boat as you!! Had a smear it came back positive HPV and high grade cell changes - my smear 3 years prior was completely fine... I had a colscopy appt 2 weeks after receiving my smear results... I was told I had to have the lletz procedure done at the colscopy appt but once there they decided it would be best for me to have it done under a general, so now waiting for that which is in 2 weeks time... it's the waiting around that drives me mad as your mind goes into overdrive.. have you had any symptoms or causes for concern?
