Terrified ! Hysterectomy soon

Hi everyone dont even know why i think posting on here will help i guess im just looking for a friendly ear !  After attending every smear since i was young I'm now 55 and 3 years ago had borderline changes. Routine smear in April severe dyskariosis . After Loop treatment was recalled six months later with high grade dyskariosis ? Invasive squamous carcinoma? So after an attempt at another loop consultant couldn't get to the cervix as it was too short and would probably need a cone biopsy under General anaesthetic.  I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks and couldn't face another 6 months of what ifs so she agreed to hysterectomy . I'm so terrified. Can't sleep . Crying all the time I'm now terrified of the operation.  When will it all end ?

Sorry for babbling on I think I just need to hear I'm not the only one

  • Hi there, I had a full hysterectomy aged 36 years of age, I'm now 71!  It truly was the best choice made because it freed me from a lot of pain, blood transfusions and tiredness that was hard to deal with.  I'm not sure how yours is being done but mine was an incision and staples.  I did as I was told (very difficult being a woman!) and six weeks later was back at work.  Stress makes you tense and that causes further pain so try to relax a little more, it's hard but you will benefit from being more in control. Have you tried Kalms (herbal remedy) they really work but check you can take them with your GP first.  Now I'll tell you a story, the lady in the bed next to me refused to go to theatre when they came for her (hysterectomy) they left her in that bed all the time I was in there, five days in total, so by the time I went home to my family she'd had nothing done, to this day I don't know what happened!!  Hope this helps a little bit. Go for it girl, you deserve to get better.  Good luck, Carol

  • Thank you for that carol I guess I'll calm down in a few days it's all so new and a bit of a shock ! It's nice to hear from people who've been there done that so to speak . Thank you so much for the support xx

  • You're very welcome.  That's what this forum is for.  X

  • Hi Macey, Hope you're feeling less anxious now? I had a hysterectomy aged 39. I've never looked back. The first 2 days afterwards were quite painful, but perfectly manageable. I walked to the breakfast room the following day and I remember being amazed I was able to do it. Recovery was straight forward. At some point you have to just give in and accept that for a couple of weeks, you're going to have to let other people help you and that you're going to read endless books, watch rubbish TV!! See it's not all bad Just give in and get sorted. You can't possibly feel any worse than you do now. You've all kinds of worry on your shoulders that will be lifted instantly. Take lots of care and hope you are ok x

  • Thankyou for that it's so comforting to hear . Feeling a little calmer now though how long that will last till another crazy thought enters my head is anybody's guess lol x

  • Hi Macey, I had a total hysterectomy & removal of the omentum layer (open surgery) last year, at 42.  I was terrified too & was actually in tears when wheeled into the anaesthetist.  It was sore for a for a while but I got through it while living alone, started chemo 4 weeks later & was back at work two weeks after that.  Six weeks off in total.  It's not easy but it's manageable & I actually find that my mood swings have gone and I feel less anxiety now so there were some unexpected perks!

Best of luck for your surgery & recovery.  Just be prepared to take it easy for a while.

  • You're welcome  I'm sure most things would be manageable if that voice in our heads stopped chatting, it doesn't have a filter!!!! When is the hysterectomy?  Take lots of care, you're in my prayers. Look forward to chatting whilst you recuperate with those chocolates ️

  • Awwww thankyou . Hopefully Feb 14th ( how romantic eh ? Lol )  unless a cancellation comes through before

Thank you everyone for your kind words
