Scared I have skin cancer

Hi

I cant stop worrying I went to the doctors today because I found a weird looking mole or something on the inside of my thigh, mrs said it's been then for years but I have never noticed, the doctor said that she does not know what it is and is sending me a letter out for a appointment to get someone to look at it through a camera and send it off I think she said, just worrying, she said it doesnt look like skin cancer but not sure what it is just cant stop worrying as I expected to go and for her to just say yes nothing to worry about, I suffer with really bad health anxiety as it is so cant cope with the waiting

  • Hi,

Please try not to worry too much. Your GP is following NICE guidelines which say that, should they be unsure as to what it is, they should refer to the experts - dermatology. Some GP practices now have a 'triage' arrangement with their local hospital dermatology dept. They send the patient to have the mole photographed & this is sent to the dermatologist to be examined. In some cases the dermatologist can tell from the photo that the mole is fine & the GP will let you know. Sometimes it may be harder to diagnose from a photo so they will then arrange an appointment to see you. They can then look at the mole with a dermascope. If this happens & they are still unsure, they will arrange for the mole to be removed for biopsy. All this doesn't definately mean the mole is cancerous so don't immediately think the worst.

75% of patients referred to dermatology are given a clean bill of health so the odds are on your side. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • Hi Roy

I had a similar experience in that I went to the GP for a strange looking mole. Wasn't sure if it had always looked strange but thought I'd get it checked out. My GP also had no idea what it was and no special equipment to take a closer look and, based on that, I was referred straight to dermatology in the main city hospital.
Anyway, like you I was nervous of it being something sinister but it turned out to be nothing but a freckle with a beauty spot sat on top of it (the freckle made it look like the beauty spot had blurred on the edges...so even the strangest looking marks and spots can be completely innocent).
The dermatologist I saw explained that it was much more likely for referred patients to turn up and be discharged immediately because their moles and marks were nothing to be worried about. I'm sure if your GP thought that your mole/mark was urgent, she wouldn't have bothered to seek an opinion based on photos (she might have just done what she did with me - refer me urgently to be seen) so try not to worry.
    Hang in there x
