Does my high fecal calprotectin level point to bowel cancer?

I have been having abdominal discomfort throughout the last 3 months. Some weeks worse than others. At stages I have has loose bowel movement, but for the most part it's been normal. On occasions I have noticed blood, but on the outside and I know that I have suffered from anal tears numerous times over the last few years.

I did have a spell a couple years back where I was in and out of the doctors every other week for about 3 months with belly problems, from sharp pains to persistent tenderness what seems like all over.

I have noticed that I am very gassy, but always but this down to IBS beforehand. Anyway, over the last couple of months I've had three sets of blood tests, including CRP, but these came back negative. I do however have a stool test which returned with what the doctor said was very high fecal calprotectin. i have a colonoscopy booked for in a month time. Should I be worried? I've seen so many posts online linking FC to Bowel Cancer. I'm trying not to worry myself to much. The doctor said that the chances are very low because I'm in my early 20s, but I don't want that to be overlooked.

IBD is suspected, but I just can't see it myself. It's driving me up the wall though. Anyone experienced anything similar or can offer advise :/?

  • Hi,

It is good to read everyone's posts and to know I'm not alone! I've been suffering with my stomach for around 10 years. I was diagnosed with Crohns by one consultant and put on meds and also a 6 weekly infliximab drip. I was also  booked in for a resection but the surgeon couldn't find anything when he went in. I have constant pain, every day and regular nightly flare ups, where I am doubled up in pain. My recent calprotectin was 1,147.  I'm just waiting for an appointment to find out what will happen next. I dread going back on meds (for some reason, the hospital took me off all meds when I was in remission )

  • Anyone know what a 3305 calprotectin may mean, it kinda shocked me how high it was today. I hope everyone has got answers and the Colonoscopies are not as bad as they sound.

    All the best.

  • Good Afternoon,

I had a second Calprotection test done recently and it was over 3000 but it seems odd as I really don't have any pain or if any symptoms of IBD. I am wondering if the test result is wrong because the first result was only borderline at 173.  I have a Colonoscopy booked in March and I am really anxious, I feel like they aren't going to find anything to be honest it's all been a bit strange!.

Any words of comfort or advice would be appreciated :)

  • Hi I am going through the same problem my fc calprotectin is over 680 I was just wondering if u are any closer to knowing the likely cause?

  • Did you have your colonoscopy jem?

my calprotectin level came back last week as 5200... I'm screwed aren't I? : (  is there any point in me hoping that it's not crohns or some form of IBD? I'm absolutely destroying myself with worry right now as I wait for my colonoscopy and mri to come through.

please someone tell me it doesn't necessarily mean IBD

  • Hello everyone.

I am slightly worried my calprotectin levels are about 650 and I  am booked in for a colonoscopy, but i am only 19. I'm scared as the doctors think it's a form of IBD, and also I'm scared for the colonoscopy.
please feel free to drop any advice. Thank you

  • Hi

im going through the same thing , have you had your colonoscopy? Thank you

  • Hello

no not yet i rang the hospital after i got my referral from the doctors and they said the waiting list is quite long and that they would contact me as to when i can get booked it. It's such a long wait not knowing.

  • Still waiting for my colonoscopy date to come through. It will be 2 weeks on Wednesday since I saw my gastroenterologist, was kind of hoping that I would of had a date by now, especially considering that my gastro put this through as an urgent.

On the positive side, my mri date came through and that's on the 12th April. Though I'm not entirely sure what an mri is going to show in regards to crohns/IBD.

My calprotectin level of 5200 is just playing on my mind so much. The waiting is almost unbearable : (

  • What's your symptoms guys?
