Delayed bowel cancer surgery

Hi there,

I'm getting a little concerned about a delay in surgery.

Having had my initial consultation at the end of October 2019, I received the diagnosis of T2N1 colorectal cancer in mid December. But the MRI scan also showed an englarged prostate for which biopsies were taken (utterly horrible) last week. The urology department are fastracking the results hopefully in time for the MDT meeting this Wednesday, but all this is delaying surgery and I'm booked at the moment for 30th of January, over 3 months after my first consultation. The team are fantastic and doing their best to reassure me that the delay will not affect the success of the surgery, but I'm really scared that the tumour has advanced and is spreading.

Can anyone advise on how fast bowel cancer spreads?

Thanks

  • Hi Mptcranley and welcome to Cancer Chat.

This question, understandably, is quite common when waiting for treatment so I just wanted to put you in touch with our cancer nurses as they will be able to explain how this all works. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m so do give them a call as they'll answer anything that is playing on your mind and hopefully put your mind at ease.

We have a section about your diagnosis on our website just here if you'd like to read up on it a bit more but it may be worth popping on the Bowel Cancer UK website as well.

I hope the MDT meeting went well today and that the surgery is a success at the end of the month.

    Kind regards,
