Hi wondering if anyone can help put my mind at rest.

I had a smear test done in 2016. The results were normal. Not long after I became pregnant. In 2017 I gave birth to a very beautiful healthy baby girl.

Just before Christmas 2019 my smear test results were abnormal, (this is the first time I've ever had an abnormal result) I went for a colposcopy the nurse told me that I was high risk, low grade. It was so small that they have said to just have another smear In a year. Im not worried about the results at the moment. I'm worried that does this mean my partner has been unfaithful? We have been together for nearly 7 years.

  • I'm not medical, and I'm sure one of the nurses will be able to advise you further, but as far as I know there's no connection between an abnormal smear and unfaithfulness. Most of us have had HPV virus infection (its highly infectious) and many abnormal smears are caused by HPV, but its not a sexually transmitted disease....Maybe check for medical side on the ask the nurses bit?

  • Thank you for replying so fast. Think I'm worried more because it is the first time I've had a normal results. The nurse did tell me that hpv was present. I've tried researching and it says that it is an sti. But I've always had normal results. Just wondering if I've had it for several years wouldn't it have showed up on previous results.

  • Hi Chaz

HPV IS sexually transmitted but it does not mean either of you have been unfaithful. It is possible to have the virus in your system but for it to be dormant and not show on testing, so you may have had it for a long time but it’s not been active.  When the virus is active, if you have a high risk strain, it can cause cell changes. You could have picked it up from your current partner or a previous partner and it’s incredibly common. Rest assured though, that it doesn’t mean your partner has been unfaithful! xx
