Breast clinic referral

Hi,

I found a small lump in my breast a month ago, kept an eye on it, but it got bigger and it feels kind of prickly and a dull ache inside. I saw the GP a week ago and she could feel it too, so has referred me to the breast clinic, appointment is tomorrow.

I’m 36, I know statistically it’s not cancer. But my mum died of breast cancer after having it 3 times, and my gran and aunt also had breast cancer.

I tend to be very matter of fact and not worry, but my breast is now swollen on the side and my armpit feels puffy (even though I can’t feel any lumps in my arm pit). So it’s making me rather stressed, I just want to know what it is!

Anyone else had similar symptoms or currently waiting to be seen?

  • It was 1 week from seeing my GP to being seen in clinic.

My understanding is urgent referrals are supposed to be seen within 2weeks from the GP referral. I think the clinic might access them on paper based on the GP notes, so maybe they decide?

Risk of breast cancer at 21 is very low, especially if no family history.

I think all she can do is see the GP again and explain her worries, the GP may decide they are not happy for her to wait 26weeks and might do something. Or they might offer reassurance.

You could post in the ask a nurse posts here, they might know.

  • Thanks, she has been back to the gp today expressing her concerns but they told her they've referred her as urgent and the waiting time is nothing to do with them, it's the hospital clinic and nothing else she can do except wait .

  • That’s frustrating. I’m sure they know what they are doing, so the only other option is to call the clinic and ask them.

(I’ve done this with other departments when I’ve been worried and they’ve always been helpful.)

Sorry I don’t have anything more helpful to tell you.
