Breast clinic referral

Hi,

I found a small lump in my breast a month ago, kept an eye on it, but it got bigger and it feels kind of prickly and a dull ache inside. I saw the GP a week ago and she could feel it too, so has referred me to the breast clinic, appointment is tomorrow.

I’m 36, I know statistically it’s not cancer. But my mum died of breast cancer after having it 3 times, and my gran and aunt also had breast cancer.

I tend to be very matter of fact and not worry, but my breast is now swollen on the side and my armpit feels puffy (even though I can’t feel any lumps in my arm pit). So it’s making me rather stressed, I just want to know what it is!

Anyone else had similar symptoms or currently waiting to be seen?

  • Vicky I’d see if you can get a cancellation before forking out. But try to trust that they would have done it there and then if they were concerned. x

  • Did they say what your pain was x

  • Nope, literally no explanation except there’s no malignancy.

The consultant who did the ultrasound and read the mammogram, showed me the mammogram and said feeling changes in the glandular tissue can be caused by changes in hormones, HRT, changing coil, etc, but nothing that applied to me. And had no answer for the swelling.

I’m waiting on the letter to see if it has an explanation. But I’m just hoping the pain and swelling just go away. Just glad it’s not sinister.

Did they tell you if the lipomas tend to cause discomfort? Maybe that is why it hurts too? I think the pain tends to radiate across when it hurts in 1 spot.

  • Yeah said I will have to get it removed but didn't want to today as they could see I was uncomfortable. Said to go back to gp and say about chest wall pain. He said that sounds more of what I have and that can be caused for a number of reasons. Also gave me the same points that you got on hormones etc. I am glad. Well over the moon. Just wish I could get pain away xx

  • I hope having the lipoma out gets rid of all the pain for you. Good luck.

  • I am currently at the same stage as you, ‘the long wait’

I went to my gp on Friday as I had been monitoring a lump that I could first feel in my arm pit. GP could feel a lump in my breast as well  but it kind of just feels hard to me? She has done a referral and I am just waiting for the letter to drop through the door. The waiting it worse then when I first found the lump!!

I am also only 37 so GP said you was young to be in the cancer bracket but does not stop the worry.

Good luck with your appointment and I hope you get a good result

  • Thank you, I’m sorry you are now in the waiting game too.

Follow down the thread, perhaps it will offer some reassurance. I was convinced the lump in my breast was cancer, everyone could feel it. I’m high risk (every immediate female member of my family has had breast cancer before 50.)

But I was seen today and it wasn’t malignant.

I cant stop you worrying, but in our age group the stats are in our favour. So all I can say is don’t google, you won’t learn anything helpful and try your best to sleep while you wait.

    good luck. x

  • Thank you, I have given myself a good talking to today and feel like if I make a plan not to worry until there is something to worry about then I have taken back some control.

  • That sounds like an excellent attitude! Worry achieves nothing. x

  • How long did you all have to wait for an appointment after seeing your GP.? My son's girlfriend is 21, she found a lump in her breast 5 weeks ago. Saw GP immediately, then again a couple of weeks later as the lump had got bigger and its painful.  The gp referred her as urgent,  but shes now been told she has a 26 to 28 week wait to be seen at the hospital.
